LATAM Airlines Brasil, formerly known as TAM Linhas Aéreas, is a prominent Brazilian airline brand and a subsidiary of LATAM Airlines Group. It operates both international and domestic flights, with its main hubs located in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasília. According to the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC), LATAM held a significant market share in passenger-kilometres flown, with 34.7% in the domestic market and 20.9% in the international market during 2019. This makes LATAM the second largest domestic airline and the largest international airline in Brazil.

Prior to its integration into LATAM Airlines Group, TAM was the largest airline in Brazil and Latin America. The company's headquarters are situated in São Paulo, and it offers scheduled services to various destinations within Brazil, as well as international flights to Europe, North America, and other parts of South America. Initially, TAM's shares were traded on the São Paulo Exchange (BM&F Bovespa) and the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "TAM." However, after the merger with LAN Airlines, TAM closed its capital and transferred its shares to LATAM Airlines Group.

In August 2015, it was announced that TAM and LAN would rebrand under the unified name of LATAM, with a single livery to be applied to all aircraft by 2018. This move aimed to create a consistent brand identity across the merged entity. TAM had been a member of the Star Alliance, but after joining forces with LAN, it transitioned to the Oneworld alliance, effective from March 31, 2014. However, on May 1, 2020, the airline withdrew from Oneworld.

History

LATAM Brasil has a rich history that traces back to the origins of TAM - Táxi Aéreo Marília. TAM – Marília, an air taxi company, was founded on February 21, 1961, in the city of Marília, Brazil. It provided the initial infrastructure for TAM – Transportes Aéreos Regionais, which was a separate entity belonging to the TAM Group.

TAM – Transportes Aéreos Regionais was established on November 11, 1975, after the Brazilian government created the Brazilian Integrated System of Regional Air Transportation. The country was divided into five different regions, and five regional airlines were granted concessions to operate air services. TAM – Regionais, under the leadership of Rolim Adolfo Amaro, became the third regional airline to commence operations on July 12, 1976. It served the Southeast and Central West regions of Brazil, including the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, parts of Mato Grosso and São Paulo, and had the potential to connect cities like Cuiabá, Rio de Janeiro, Londrina, Maringá, and Brasília.

TAM – Linhas Aéreas Regionais, a joint venture between TAM – Táxi Aéreo Marília and VASP (a state-owned airline at the time), was formed to expand TAM's operations. It obtained the IATA code KK on October 13, 1999. Initially, TAM flew Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirantes, but these aircraft were not suitable for the growing demands of the airline and required government subsidies to be profitable.

To meet the increasing passenger demand, TAM acquired used Fokker F27 turboprop aircraft, which were refurbished in the Netherlands. However, the import authorization for these aircraft came with certain conditions, including the requirement to maintain three Bandeirantes for every F27 and reducing the F27's capacity to 40 passengers by removing seats. TAM gradually expanded its fleet and network, reaching 10 F27s by 1983. The airline reached milestones of 1 million passengers in 1981 and 2 million passengers in 1984.

In 1986, TAM faced financial difficulties and went public, offering its stock in the market. During the same year, TAM – Transportes Aéreos Regionais (KK) acquired another regional airline called VOTEC, which operated in northern and central Brazil. VOTEC was renamed Brasil Central Linhas Aéreas. TAM and Brasil Central operated as a consortium with integrated networks and fleet, but they had distinct color schemes, flight number IATA codes (KK for TAM and JJ for Brasil Central), and designated areas of operation. TAM reached 3 million passengers in 1988.

In 1990, the Brazilian government lifted restrictions on regional airline operations, allowing them to fly anywhere in Brazil. As a result, Brasil Central was renamed TAM - Transportes Aéreos Meridionais and adopted the same colour scheme as TAM (KK), while retaining the IATA code JJ.

Throughout the years, TAM continued to expand and enhance its services. It acquired more aircraft, including Fokker 100 jets in 1989, and started operating international flights. In 1997, TAM ordered a significant number of planes from Airbus, marking a shift towards larger aircraft. The airline changed its name to TAM Linhas Aéreas in 2000.

TAM's efforts to merge with other airlines, such as Varig, did not materialize. Instead, TAM focused on gradual growth and the addition of new aircraft, a strategy known as "Evolution." In 2010, TAM became a member of the Star Alliance. The airline also transitioned from Sabre's Passenger
