History

Lincoln International Business School is part of the University of Lincoln, which originated in the early 1990s when the University of Humberside began establishing a presence in Lincoln. In 1996, the institution officially became the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside.

In 2001, it was renamed the University of Lincoln, reflecting its focus on Lincolnshire and its new academic direction. The Brayford Pool campus was developed as part of this expansion, becoming the main hub for teaching and research. During this time, the business school was formed to deliver courses in business, management, and economics.

The business school initially focused on undergraduate education and gradually expanded to include postgraduate programmes, executive education, and research. By the mid-2000s, it had developed strong links with industry, offering placements and accredited courses in partnership with professional bodies such as ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, AIA, CIPD, and CMI.

These accreditations enabled students to gain recognised qualifications that supported their career development. The school also began developing distance learning options, aimed at working professionals, including members of the Armed Forces through the Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme.

Throughout the 2010s, the school broadened its research activities and introduced several research groups and centres focusing on areas such as responsible management, economics, and sustainability. Collaborations with the NHS, Royal Air Force, and engineering and agriculture sectors were developed through bespoke education programmes.

The school supported local and national employers by delivering professional training, consultancy, and leadership development. New facilities were introduced, including access to the Bloomberg Terminal and the launch of the Lincoln Student Managed Investment Fund (LSMIF).

The school was renamed Lincoln International Business School to reflect its global focus and growing international student and faculty base. It continued to offer industry-focused undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in areas including accountancy, finance, economics, management, marketing, events, and tourism. Study abroad opportunities and professional placements were integrated into many programmes.

Between 2020 and 2025, the school strengthened its position through further research aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and increased collaboration with global institutions. It offered online master's programmes for working professionals, developed executive development courses, and launched LIBS Connect, a business engagement platform. It also delivered the UK Government’s Help to Grow: Management Course to support small and medium-sized businesses.

In 2025, the University of Lincoln ranked among the top 10 UK universities for enabling start-ups and maintained strong graduate outcomes. Lincoln International Business School continues to focus on responsible education, research, and partnerships that contribute to business and society.
