History
L'Oréal has a rich history that began in the early 20th century with the entrepreneurial spirit of Eugène Paul Louis Schueller, a French chemist. Schueller developed a hair dye formula called Oréale and decided to sell it to Parisian hairdressers. On July 31, 1919, he registered his company as the Société Française de Teintures Inoffensives pour Cheveux, laying the foundation for what would eventually become L'Oréal. From its inception, the company's core principles revolved around research and innovation in the beauty industry.
In its early years, L'Oréal had a small team of three chemists in 1920. However, the company experienced significant growth, employing 100 chemists by 1950 and reaching 1,000 by 1984. As of 2021, L'Oréal has a vast global workforce, estimated at 85,252 employees worldwide. It is worth noting that during World War II, Schueller provided financial support and held meetings for a French fascist-leaning and anti-communist group called La Cagoule at L'Oréal headquarters. After the war some members of this group, including Jacques Corrèze, who later served as CEO of the company's United States operation, were employed by L'Oréal. This association is documented in Michael Bar-Zohar's book, Bitter Scent.
While L'Oréal initially focused on hair colour products, the company expanded its offerings to include a wide range of cleansing and beauty products. Today, L'Oréal markets over 500 brands and thousands of individual products across various sectors of the beauty industry.
