Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT), located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, is a state technical university established in 2013. The university originated from Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College (MMMEC), which was founded in 1962. The Government of Uttar Pradesh upgraded the college to a residential university to address the shortage of technical education facilities in the state following the reorganisation of 2000, when Roorkee University was transferred to Uttarakhand.

The transformation into a university was formalised through the Uttar Pradesh Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology Act, 2013. Since becoming a state university, MMMUT has implemented its own admission processes and, from 2021-2022, adopted the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-MAIN) for undergraduate BTech admissions. It also offers pharmacy courses through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). Postgraduate admissions include programmes such as MTech, MCA, MBA, MSc, and others, with entry based on national level examinations like GATE and the Uttar Pradesh Combined Entrance Test (UPCET).

MMMUT offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering, technology, management, pharmacy, and sciences. The university has expanded its academic offerings to include disciplines such as Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology, and professional courses like BBA and MBA.

In 2022, MMMUT received an A grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), making it the first state university in Uttar Pradesh to achieve this distinction. It has also been ranked 84th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 in the engineering category.

Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) is a state university located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The university’s origins trace back to the establishment of Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College (MMMEC) in 1962. The engineering college operated for several decades before being upgraded to a full-fledged university.

In October 2012, the Government of Uttar Pradesh announced the decision to convert the engineering college into a residential university. This decision was motivated by the recognition of a gap in technical education within Uttar Pradesh following the reorganisation of 2000, during which Roorkee University was transferred to the state of Uttarakhand. The upgrade was intended to strengthen technical education infrastructure within Uttar Pradesh.

The formal establishment of the university took place in 2013 through the enactment of the Uttar Pradesh Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology Act, 2013. This legislation was passed by the state government in September 2013, officially transforming Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College into Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology.

Following its establishment as a state technical university, MMMUT introduced its own admission test, the Malaviya Entrance Test (MET), for undergraduate courses, replacing the earlier Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examinations (SEE-UPTU or UPSEE) that had been used until 2014. However, from the academic session 2021-2022, MMMUT adopted the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-MAIN), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), as the basis for undergraduate BTech admissions. For Bachelor of Pharmacy admissions, the university uses the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

For postgraduate admissions, the university initially admitted MTech students based on their Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores. Other postgraduate programmes such as MCA and MSc used the MET until the academic session 2020-2021. Starting from 2021-2022, admissions to a range of courses—including BBA, BPharm, lateral entry BTech, MBA, MCA, MTech across twelve specialisations, and MSc—have been conducted through the Uttar Pradesh Combined Entrance Test (UPCET), also administered by the National Testing Agency. UPCET is the successor to the earlier UPSEE and is also referred to as the Uttar Pradesh Joint Entrance Examinations (UPJEE). The university follows reservation policies according to the norms prescribed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh and MMMUT.

In 2022, MMMUT received accreditation with an A grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), marking it as the first state university in Uttar Pradesh to attain this grade.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked MMMUT in multiple categories over recent years. In 2024, the university was ranked 84th in the engineering category, 94th in the university category, and placed within the 101-150 band overall in India.

Located approximately nine kilometres from Gorakhpur Railway Station along the Gorakhpur-Deoria road, the university campus houses the Administrative Block, which serves as its main building. The institution currently offers undergraduate programmes in disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Information Technology. Postgraduate courses include MCA, BBA, MBA, MTech, MSc, and PhD programmes in various specialisations.

Since its inception as MMMEC in 1962, fifty-four batches of students have graduated from the institution. These graduates have been trained through rigorous education and practical experience under the guidance of experienced faculty members.

Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across various disciplines. 

At the undergraduate level, MMMUT provides Bachelor of Technology (BTech) courses in several engineering branches. These include Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Information Technology. These programmes span four years and aim to equip students with fundamental technical knowledge and practical skills relevant to their fields. Alongside engineering courses, the university offers Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) programmes, which prepare students for careers in pharmaceutical sciences. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is another undergraduate course available, focusing on management and business fundamentals.

For admissions into undergraduate programmes, MMMUT follows the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-MAIN), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), from the academic session 2021-2022 onwards. Earlier, admissions were through the university’s own Malaviya Entrance Test (MET). The pharmacy courses admit students based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

At the postgraduate level, MMMUT offers a diverse set of programmes. The Master of Technology (MTech) is available in twelve specialisations, covering advanced areas in engineering and technology. Admission to the MTech programmes is primarily based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores of candidates. The university also offers Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Science (MSc) degrees in selected disciplines. For management studies, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme is available, focusing on various facets of business and organisational leadership.

Admission to postgraduate courses such as MBA, MCA, MTech, and MSc, along with lateral entry to BTech (second year), BBA, and BPharm, is conducted through the Uttar Pradesh Combined Entrance Test (UPCET) from the academic session 2021-2022. The UPCET is organised by the National Testing Agency and serves as the successor to the earlier Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE).

Apart from these, MMMUT provides opportunities for doctoral studies (PhD) across multiple disciplines, supporting research and innovation in engineering, technology, sciences, and management. The university’s academic programmes are designed to follow the norms and reservation policies prescribed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

In the NIRF 2024 Engineering rankings, MMMUT secured the 84th position among institutions nationwide. This marks a significant improvement from its 2022 ranking of 251–300, indicating progress in various parameters such as teaching, learning resources, research, and professional practices.

Within the University category, MMMUT was ranked 94th in 2024. In the Overall category, MMMUT was placed in the rank band of 101–150. This broad category evaluates institutions across all disciplines. Among state public universities, MMMUT achieved the 40th position in the NIRF 2024 rankings.

Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) published its placement report for the year 2023, providing insights into the job integration rate of its graduates. According to the report, a total of 973 job offers were extended to students during the placement season.

The average salary package offered to successful candidates stood at INR 6.80 lakh per annum, while the highest package reached INR 52 lakh per annum. Prominent organisations that participated in the 2023 placement drive included Google, IndiaMart, JSW, Hummingwave, and Tech Mahindra, among others.
