Summary
The state Government of Maharashtra has established and incorporated an independent University of the health Sciences for the purposes of ensuring proper and systematic instruction, teaching, training and research in modern medicine and Indian system of medicine in the State of Maharashtra. this ensures the state has balanced growth in the medical sciences.
It was with this objective the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences was established in Nashik city of Maharashtra State on 3rd June 1998 by promulgating the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Act, 1998. Initially, the University was functional at Gangapur Road, Nashik. In 2004 University headquarters shifted to Mhasrul, Dindori Road, Nashik at its own building.
The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) is guided by a strategic agenda providing right direction to the health science education in the State. Its consistency of purpose, its goal and mission will no doubt help health science education and thus health & education services to reach a high level of elevation. The University shall be both, a teaching and an affiliating University.
History
Maharashtra University of Health Sciences was established on June 3, 1999, by the Government of Maharashtra with the primary objective of streamlining and standardizing medical education and health sciences training across the state. Prior to its establishment, medical colleges and health training institutes in Maharashtra operated independently, leading to disparities in curriculum, examination standards, and administrative policies. The formation of MUHS aimed to create a unified university that could oversee and coordinate the education, examination, and research activities of health sciences disciplines throughout Maharashtra.
The university was founded under the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Act, 1999, which provided the legal framework for its establishment. MUHS took over the responsibilities of affiliating medical, dental, nursing, paramedical, and allied health colleges in the state, ensuring uniformity and quality assurance in health sciences education. Its inception marked a significant milestone in the history of health education in Maharashtra, fostering a centralized system to promote excellence and innovation in medical training and healthcare research.
Over the years, MUHS has expanded its scope to include health sciences disciplines, including Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani, and Siddha, alongside modern medicine and nursing. The university has also developed postgraduate and doctoral programs, encouraging research and specialization in various fields of health sciences.
