History

Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI) was established in April 2001, marking the beginning of its journey with the admission of its first batch of MBBS students. Managed by the Sri Balaji Educational & Charitable Public Trust (SBECPT), MGMCRI has grown into a leading institution in the field of medical education in India. Over the years, the intake of MBBS students has steadily increased, with the Medical Council of India approving an increase to 250 students per year in 2014, reflecting the institution's high standards and robust infrastructure.

The trust responsible for MGMCRI has also established other notable institutions. In 2003, the Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College (KGNC) was founded, followed by the Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS) in 2006 and the Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute in 2008. Recognizing the quality of these institutions, the University Grants Commission granted Deemed to be University status in 2008, forming Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV), a Health Sciences University. The first cohort of students under SBV graduated in December 2012, and since then, the university has continued to make strides in education, services, and research.

MGMCRI began offering postgraduate courses in clinical specialties in 2007, expanding to pre-clinical and para-clinical specialties in the following years. By 2011, super-specialty programs in Cardiology, Urology, Neurosurgery, and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery were introduced. The institution also provides PhD opportunities across all its programs, enabling students to pursue their academic ambitions to the highest level.

MGMCRI offers a variety of programs, including the MBBS with an intake of 250 students, 20 postgraduate programs, four super-specialty programs, and 13 fellowship programs. The institution is committed to providing high-quality medical education, supported by modern infrastructure such as lecture theatres, electronic learning facilities, and a Medical Simulation Centre. The Central Library is equipped with a vast collection of books, journals, educational CD-ROMs, and internet access for online journal article retrieval, ensuring students have access to the latest information in medical education.

The attached MGMCRI hospital, with its 1,350 beds and ultra-modern super-specialty facilities, plays a crucial role in offering efficient tertiary medical care. The hospital's health care delivery system extends to urban and rural health centres, exposing students to primary healthcare concepts. Research is also a significant focus at MGMCRI, with the establishment of the Central Interdisciplinary Research Facility (CIDRF). This facility, covering 6,000 square feet, is equipped for cutting-edge research, fostering a culture of innovation and inquiry.

MGMCRI has received numerous accreditations and accolades over the years. The institution is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an "A" grade. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) promoted by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, SBV consistently ranks among the top 100 universities in the country. In 2016, SBV achieved notable rankings, including second place in the "Outreach & Inclusivity" parameter and 19th place in "Teaching Learning Resources." By 2018, SBV had risen to 72nd in the overall university rankings. MGMCRI, in its first NIRF application, was ranked 23rd among all medical colleges in India and 97th among all higher educational institutions.

In subsequent years, MGMCRI continued to perform well in national rankings. In 2020, it secured 40th place among medical colleges in the NIRF rankings. The institution’s hospital has also received recognition, with the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) granting it entry-level pre-accreditation and NABH Nursing Excellence Certification in 2021.

MGMCRI’s success is credited to the leadership of its founders and directors. Shri M. K. Rajagopalan, the young chairman of SBECPT, played a pivotal role in establishing the institution. He was supported by Prof. Rajaram Pagadala, the first director, CEO, and dean, who brought vast experience from institutions such as JIPMER and other medical colleges. Later, Dr. D. S. Dubey took charge as director and dean in 2002, during which time MGMCRI gained international recognition. His tenure is remembered as a golden period for the institution, laying the foundation for its current success.
