History
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) is a public university located in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established on 7 September 1990 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, through a separation from Madurai Kamaraj University, to address the educational needs of the three southernmost districts of Tamil Nadu — Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), and Kanyakumari. Later, the jurisdiction was expanded to include the newly formed Tenkasi district.
The university is named after the Tamil scholar and professor Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai (1855–1897), renowned for authoring the verse drama Manonmaniam, which became the official invocation song, "Tamil Thaai Vazhthu," sung at official functions in Tamil Nadu.
The university was established as a teaching-cum-affiliating institution with the purpose of catering to the long-felt need for higher education in this rural region of southern Tamil Nadu. During the 2023 placement season for the postgraduate two-year programme, a total of 220 students secured employment. Additionally, 85 students were selected for higher studies. These figures are based on a total of 734 students who were eligible for placement.
