Summary

Legendary fashion designer Marc Jacobs created Marc Jacobs International with Robert Duffy in 1984. The brand was supported by two pillars: love of fashion and commitment to quality. Finding the perfect balance between tradition and creativity.. the luxury fashion brand is relevant till date as a driving force on the global fashion map.

History

Marc Jacobs was born and raised in New York and developed a keen interest in fashion design at a young age. While pursuing fashion design at Parsons School Of Design he designed and sold his first line of hand-knit sweaters to Charivari. In 1984 Jacobs was hired to design for Reuben Thomas Inc. With company executive Robert Duffy as a partner he formed Jacobs Duffy Designs. The young man shortly secured seed money to launch his own eponymous fashion label and in 1987 he was the youngest designer to be awarded the fashion industry's highest tribute: Council of Fashion Designers of America's Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent.

In 1989 Jacobs joined Perry Ellis as Vice President- Women's Design. Here he earned recognition for his grunge collection with iconic looks like floral dresses worn with combat boots. Jacobs was christened "guru of grunge" by Women's Wear Daily and won CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year 1992 largely because of this collection which ushered in the Nineties' grunge look. His employment with Perry Ellis, however, was terminated perhaps due to his departure from the brand's traditional image.

In 1993 Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. created its own design and licensing company: Marc Jacobs International Company L.P. The following year Jacobs's debuted a menswear line. In 1997 he opened his first boutique and—in exchange for the financial support towards his label—signed on as Creative Director of Louis Vuitton where he reportedly quadrupled the luxury fashion brand's sales in ten years. Jacobs transformed the French luxury conglomerate when, tasked with designing its first line of ready-to-wear. He collaborated with contemporary artists for the collections including Stephen Sprouse.. Takashi Murakami.. Richard Prince.. and Yayoi Kusama. By the time he bid it adieu in 2013—to focus, reports said, on taking his own label public—Vuitton was firmly entrenched as one of the most desirable brands in the world.

In 2001 Marc Jacobs expanded his eponymous brand and launched a diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs followed by a kidswear line: Little Marc Jacobs. In 2013 he stepped down as Creative Director of Louis Vuitton to focus on his own fashion brand. That year he launched Marc Jacobs Beauty with actress Jessica Lange as the face of the brand. In 2019, Jacobs was presented with MTV's first "Fashion Trailblazer Award" at the Video Music Awards in partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Per Vogue: "Jacobs’s streetwise aesthetic—in his words, "a little preppy, a little grungy, a little couture"—won him the hearts of hip chicks the world over including Sofia Coppola, Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. For 30 years he has been building his brand of playful clothes and accessories." In 2015 Marc Jacobs folded its popular affordable sub-brand Marc by Marc Jacobs

In September 2020 Jacobs released “Heaven": a polysexual line that aspired to blur gender boundaries. Today too the fashion brand continues to make headlines. Jacobs and Duffy continue to run the company and are committed to giving back to the communities where they have stores and beyond. Per LVMH's official website: "Part of a generation that's conscious of the world around it.. sensitive to humanitarianism and social entrepreneurship.. Marc Jacobs has made its mark as rebellious unpredictable original unique and authentic all at the same time. Committed to the communities around them, Marc Jacobs International leads by example, supporting over seventy-five charities and organizations around the world."

Vogue acclaimed his Fall 2023 RTW showing as "He's always preferred to shock- more than aim to please- and that appears to be what he was up to here with this short sharp show… Jacobs has the advantage he's always had: that singular talent for provoking discussion and for making us feel."
