History

The Microsoft AI for Good Lab was established in 2018 with a mission to apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Its inception was driven by the realization that while technology companies possess significant expertise in AI and data science, many nonprofit organisations and social enterprises lack the technical resources to leverage these tools effectively. The lab was created to bridge this gap, providing technological expertise and resources to organisations tackling critical global issues in areas such as healthcare, environmental sustainability, humanitarian action, and accessibility.

The lab’s journey began with a focus on applying AI to environmental challenges through the “AI for Earth” initiative. This program aimed to support projects that used AI to monitor, model, and manage Earth's natural systems. It quickly expanded to include initiatives such as AI for Humanitarian Action, which partners with organisations like the United Nations and the Red Cross to enhance disaster response and preparedness, and AI for Accessibility, which develops tools to empower people with disabilities.
