History

In 1981, Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad's visionary efforts marked the beginning of MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU). The university was founded to turn hardship into opportunity and create a learning environment prioritising overall development.

In 1983, the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) was established, marking the inception of one of Maharashtra's first private engineering colleges. This period also saw the formation of the Maharashtra Academy of Engineering and Educational Research (MAEER), under which MIT operated. The subsequent years witnessed the establishment of several key institutions, including MIT Management Education, MIT MIMER (Maharashtra Institute of Medical Education and Research), and MIT Polytechnic. These pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for MIT's growth and recognition as a technical and professional education leader.

The mid-90s marked MIT's entry onto the global stage with the establishment of the World Peace Centre (WPC) at MIT. This initiative was further bolstered by the recognition of the UNESCO Chair at WPC. During this period, additional institutions like MIT-AOE (Academy of Engineering) and MIT-COE (College of Engineering) were founded.

MAEER expanded its academic offerings with the establishment of MAEER’s College of Arts, Commerce & Science, MITSOM (MIT School of Management), MIT-SOB (School of Business), MITSOT (School of Telecom), and the MIT School of Government. Additionally, Vishwa Shanti Gurukul was established, embodying the institution's commitment to blending traditional values with modern education.

A major transformation occurred in 2017 when MIT was granted university status, leading to the establishment of MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) in Kothrud, Pune. This period also saw the founding of Avantika University in Ujjain, MIT-Shillong, and MIT-ADT (Art, Design & Technology). The public dedication ceremony of the World Peace Dome during this time symbolised MIT-WPU’s unwavering commitment to global peace.

MIT-WPU promoted digital transformation in 2021, harmonising traditional and modern teaching methodologies. This initiative enhanced the learning experience, making education more accessible and adaptable to contemporary needs. In 2022, MIT-WPU was recognised as a Great Place to Work.
