History

Mizoram University was established on 2 July 2001 as a central university by the Parliament of India under the Mizoram University Act, 2000. The University was created to meet the educational needs of the state of Mizoram, which had previously been served by the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya. Before the establishment of Mizoram University, NEHU operated a campus in Mizoram, offering postgraduate education in seven departments: Economics, Education, English, Forestry, Mizo, Psychology, and Public Administration. This campus, headed by a Pro-Vice-Chancellor, laid the foundation for higher education in the region, facilitating the eventual transition to an independent university.

The creation of Mizoram University marked a significant milestone in the educational development of the region. The University began functioning in 2001, taking over the existing NEHU campus and its resources. Located on the outskirts of Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, the University occupies a sprawling area of 978.2 acres, providing ample space for future growth and expansion.

In its early years, Mizoram University focused on developing its infrastructure and expanding its academic programmes. The University rapidly grew, establishing new departments and schools of study to cater to the diverse educational needs of the state. Over time, it introduced undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, becoming a comprehensive institution offering a wide range of academic disciplines. The University also implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in 2013, aligning itself with modern educational standards and practices.

Mizoram University has consistently pursued excellence in higher education. In recognition of its academic achievements, the University was accredited with an ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2014 and again in 2019. It also received ISO certification in 2018, further establishing its commitment to quality education.

The University has made significant strides in promoting environmental sustainability. In 2013, the Mizoram State Pollution Control Board awarded Mizoram University a Grade ‘A’ in a Green Audit of its campus. The University is one of the first in India to effectively operate on a solar power system, with academic buildings, hostels, administrative blocks, and streetlights powered by solar energy. This eco-friendly initiative reflects the University's dedication to environmental stewardship.
