History
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has a rich history that dates back to the establishment of Nanyang University in 1955. Nanyang University was the first Chinese-language university in Southeast Asia and played a significant role in promoting Chinese culture and education in the region.
In 1980, the government of Singapore proposed a merger between Nanyang University and the University of Singapore, which eventually led to the formation of the National University of Singapore (NUS). The merger resulted in the creation of two institutions, with NUS focusing on the arts and social sciences, and the newly established Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) providing technical education and research to support Singapore's growing economy.
NTI was granted full autonomy in 1991 and was renamed Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Under the leadership of President Cham Tao Soon, NTU embarked on a strategic plan in the early 2000s to transform itself into a world-class institution. This included significant investments in research infrastructure, faculty recruitment, and student scholarships.
One of the key initiatives of this strategic plan was the establishment of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in 2013, a joint medical school with Imperial College London. The medical school focuses on developing innovative approaches to medical education and research.
NTU has also launched several innovative initiatives, including the Smart Campus initiative in 2013, which aims to integrate digital technologies into all aspects of campus life to improve the student experience and drive innovation in education. The university has also established partnerships with leading industry players, including Alibaba, Rolls-Royce, BMW, Volvo, Delta Electronics, and Singtel, to develop solutions for some of the world's most pressing challenges.
Today, NTU is recognized as one of the top universities in the world, ranked 11th globally and first among the world’s best young universities for five consecutive years (QS university rankings). It is known for its excellence in research and innovation, commitment to sustainability, and focus on delivering a high-quality education to its students. With a thriving campus community of over 33,000 students and a rapidly expanding range of programs and research initiatives, NTU is poised to continue making significant contributions to the global academic and research landscape for years to come.
