The National Institute of Sports, also known as the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, is India’s foremost institution for sports training and education. Situated on a vast campus in Patiala, the institute offers a wide range of facilities that cater to numerous sports including athletics, wrestling, boxing, swimming, basketball, and more. Its infrastructure comprises athletic tracks, indoor sports halls, swimming pools, gymnasiums, and specialised training grounds, enabling comprehensive athlete preparation.

These courses are designed to develop skilled coaches, trainers, and sports professionals who contribute to enhancing athletic performance nationwide.

The institute functions as the academic arm of the Sports Authority of India, playing a central role in advancing the country’s sports capabilities. It also undertakes research in various areas of sports science and supports the development of scientific training methodologies. Additionally, the institute houses a museum that preserves memorabilia related to India’s sporting heritage.

The National Institute of Sports was established on 7 May 1961 by the Government of India. Its formation followed recommendations made by an Ad Hoc Inquiry Committee set up in July 1958, which identified the need for a central institution to develop skilled coaches across multiple sports disciplines in the country. To better understand global standards, the Kaul-Kapoor Committee was appointed and conducted visits to leading sports institutes abroad. Their findings informed the decision to establish the institute on the grounds of the Moti Bagh Palace in Patiala, Punjab.

Initially named the National Institute of Sports, the institute’s primary objective was to provide systematic training to coaches and sports professionals, enhancing the overall quality of sports in India. The location was chosen for its historical and logistical significance, situated within the expansive premises of the former royal estate of Patiala.

In 1973, the institute was renamed the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in memory of Subhas Chandra Bose, a prominent leader in India’s independence movement. This change reflected the institute’s commitment to national pride and sporting excellence.

The institute is housed in the Moti Bagh Palace, constructed in 1847, which offers a blend of Sikh and European architectural styles. The campus spans over 268 acres, providing facilities for a wide range of sports including athletics, wrestling, boxing, basketball, swimming, and others. Over time, the institute developed specialised infrastructure to support comprehensive training and research in sports sciences.

In 1984, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) was established to oversee and promote sports development nationally. Three years later, in 1987, the institute was integrated into the SAI framework through the merger with the Society for National Institute of Physical Education and Sports (SNIPES), which brought together various physical education and coaching institutions under one umbrella.

Throughout its history, the National Institute of Sports has offered numerous academic and professional courses in coaching and sports sciences. It has contributed to the preparation of coaches who have worked with Indian athletes at national and international levels. The institute also houses research departments focusing on exercise physiology, sports medicine, psychology, nutrition, biomechanics, and other related fields.
