Its products and services also include NetEase Cloud Music, a music streaming platform; Yanxuan, an e-commerce platform, which sells private label products, including consumer electronics, food, apparel, homeware, kitchenware, and other general merchandise; NetEase Media, an internet media platform; NetEase Mail, an email service; NetEase CC Live streaming, a live streaming platform with a focus on game broadcasting; and NetEase Pay, a payment platform. The company was formerly known as NetEase.com, Inc. and changed its name to NetEase, Inc. in March 2012. NetEase, Inc. was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Hangzhou, the People's Republic of China.

History

NetEase, Inc. is a Chinese internet technology company based in Beijing founded in 1997 by William Lei Ding who currently serves as the CEO. The company began as an online gaming platform provider and developed into one of the largest internet and mobile companies in the world today. In 2003, NetEase launched its own instant messaging platform called WangXin, enabling Internet users in China to send free text messages to their contacts. In the same year, the company also started its online community services business. By 2003, NetEase had started offering a range of services, including e-mail, music, video, and game downloads. In 2004, NetEase became the first Chinese company to successfully list on the NASDAQ. In the same year, the company launched its original portal and began to expand its operations both in the domestic and international market. In 2005, NetEase acquired California-based mobile games company Quviq and entered the mobile game industry. In the same year, the company started offering search services in the form of its Yahoo! China partnership. In 2007, NetEase launched a joint venture with Chinese telecommunications giant China Unicom, called Yi Lian, giving NetEase access to China’s newly opened up 3G market. In 2009, NetEase launched its online shopping portal and retail business, which would later become one of the largest online marketplaces in China. In 2010, NetEase became the third-largest online gaming company in the world and had succeeded in making mobile gaming its core business. In 2013, NetEase became the largest online music service provider in China. In 2015, NetEase entered into a partnership with Apple Inc to become the exclusive provider of Apple Music streaming in China and launched its own music streaming service, Netease Music, which has since become one of the most popular streaming services in the country. In 2016, NetEase launched its own app store, called Apps.163.com, as well as its own mobile payment system, called YeePay. To date, NetEase has continued to diversify its business, expanding into various industries including retail, food delivery, cloud services, and AI.
