It offers more than 160 academic programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral levels. The academic operations span three campuses in Mangaluru, Nitte, and Bengaluru.
NITTE is accredited with an 'A+' grade by NAAC and its BPharm programme holds NBA accreditation. It has received national and international recognition, including placement in the QS World University Rankings: Asia (501–550 band), Times Higher Education Asia Rankings (601+ band), and a 244th position in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. It is also ranked in the NIRF 2024 with notable positions in medical, dental, and pharmacy categories.
The university is actively involved in healthcare outreach, running 21 rural health centres and conducting numerous community health and education programmes. It also promotes sustainable development through environmental audits, rainwater harvesting, and biodiversity efforts.
History
NITTE (Deemed to be University), located in Deralakatte, Mangaluru, India, traces its origins to the Nitte Education Trust, established in 1979 by Justice K. S. Hegde, a former Supreme Court Judge and Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The Trust was founded with the aim of providing quality education and healthcare, particularly to rural communities.
The first institution under the Nitte Education Trust was the A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (ABSMIDS), which was founded in 1985 and initially affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. On 4th June 2008, ABSMIDS was conferred the status of a “Deemed-to-be University” by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, thereby formally establishing NITTE (Deemed to be University).
Following this, several other institutions were brought under the university's ambit in 2009. These included the K. S. Hegde Medical Academy (established in 1999), the Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (established in 1983), the Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (established in 1992), and the Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy (established in 1997).
Over time, the university expanded further by establishing additional institutions: the Nitte Institute of Communication in 2012, the Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research in 2013, and the Nitte Institute of Architecture in 2015. In 2021, the Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing became the latest addition. In 2022, the university established the Nitte MAM Institute of Technology.
NITTE (Deemed to be University) offers over 160 programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral levels in disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, allied health sciences, biological sciences, media and communication, speech and audiology, architecture, fashion technology, and engineering. These programmes are delivered across three campuses in Nitte, Mangaluru, and Bengaluru.
The university has over 27,000 students, more than 5,500 faculty members, and a network of over 1,00,000 alumni. Its healthcare facilities include a teaching hospital accredited by NABH and NABL, and it operates 21 rural health centres across five districts, serving over 250,000 beneficiaries annually. It also engages in multiple outreach initiatives, such as public health awareness campaigns, school support programmes, and disaster relief efforts.
NITTE has consistently focused on quality assurance and sustainability. It received Grade 'A' accreditation by NAAC in 2013, which was upgraded to A+ in 2021. It was also placed in Category A of Deemed-to-be Universities by the MHRD in 2012. NITTE (Deemed to be University) offers a wide range of academic programmes across various disciplines, catering to undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma, and fellowship levels. These programmes are delivered across its campuses in Nitte, Mangaluru, and Bengaluru, and span fields such as health sciences, technology, media, architecture, design, commerce, and management.
At the undergraduate level, the university offers several health and allied health science programmes including BSc in Radiation Therapy Technology, Renal Dialysis Technology, and Nursing, along with Post Basic BSc Nursing. Students can also pursue a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm), Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT), and a Bachelor in Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (BASLP). Programmes in applied sciences and hospitality include BSc (Honours) in Biomedical Science and Hotel Management, and BSc in Data Analytics. The university also provides engineering and computer application programmes such as BTech at both Nitte and Bengaluru campuses and BCA at both Nitte and Mangaluru campuses. In addition, it offers Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) at both Mangaluru and Bengaluru campuses. Programmes in business and communication include BA (Honours) in Media & Communication, BCom (General and Professional), and BBA at both Nitte and Mangaluru campuses. The university also offers Bachelor of Design (BDes) programmes in Fashion Design and Interior Design at the Bengaluru campus.
At the postgraduate level, NITTE offers a diverse set of programmes including MD, MS, and MDS in various medical and dental specialities. Super-speciality training is offered through the MCh in Urology. Public health and administration are covered through MPH and MHAHSM programmes. Several MSc programmes are offered in clinical and laboratory sciences including Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology, Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology, Medical Imaging Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Clinical Embryology, Biomedical Science, Food Science & Technology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Cancer Biology, and Marine Biotechnology. Specialised nursing streams include Medical Surgical Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology Nursing. Pharmacy-related postgraduate programmes include PharmD, PharmD (Post Baccalaureate), and MPharm. The university also offers Master of Physiotherapy (MPT), MTech (at Nitte and Bengaluru), MBA and MCA (at both campuses), M.Des in Fashion and Interior Design, and the CCrISP course for surgical care.
NITTE offers doctoral (PhD) programmes in Medical, Dental, Pharmaceutical, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Allied Health, and Biological Sciences. It also provides fellowship programmes in Oral Implantology, Interventional Pulmonology, and Neuroimmunology. Additional offerings include diploma and PG diploma courses such as DPharm, Post Basic Diploma in Dialysis Nursing, and postgraduate diplomas in CT and MRI technology. The university also runs specialised certificate programmes including ELNEC Palliative Care, Geriatric Mental Health, Lactation Education, and Prehospital & Emergency Life Support.
