History
Omnicom Group, one of the world's leading advertising and marketing services conglomerates, has a rich history that began in 1986. The company was co-created by Allen Rosenshine, Keith Reinhard, and John Bernbach, the son of William Bernbach. This collaboration resulted in a three-way merger of prominent advertising agencies: BBDO Worldwide, Doyle Dane Bernbach, and Needham Harper Worldwide.
In the early days of Omnicom, Allen Rosenshine assumed the role of Chairman. However, in 1989, he stepped down from this position to return to his responsibilities at BBDO Worldwide. Bruce Crawford, who had previously served as CEO of BBDO before leaving to run the Metropolitan Opera in 1985, then took on the role of Chairman at Omnicom.
A pivotal moment in Omnicom's history occurred in 1997 when John Wren, the number two executive at the company, was appointed as Chief Executive Officer. Bruce Crawford continued to contribute to the company as Chairman during this period, maintaining a stable leadership structure.
In July 2013, Omnicom made headlines with the announcement of a proposed merger with Publicis Groupe to form Publicis Omnicom Group. However, by May 2014, the deal fell through, and the merger did not proceed.
By 2014, Omnicom had solidified its position as the second-largest agency holding company globally, reporting revenues exceeding $15 billion. During this time, the company launched Omniwomen in April 2014, a strategic initiative aimed at increasing the number and influence of female leaders within the organization. Omniwomen expanded its presence with branches in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, China, and the UAE.
Omnicom continued to strengthen its leadership team and board of directors. In July 2017, Gracia Martore, former President and CEO of TEGNA Inc., joined Omnicom's Board as an independent director. The company continued to prioritize a diverse and independent board with subsequent appointments, including Ronnie S. Hawkins in February 2018.
In May 2018, Omnicom Group expanded its global footprint by bringing maslansky + partners, its language strategy agency, to Australia.
Significant changes occurred in the leadership structure in November 2021 when Daryl Simm was promoted to President and COO. The following month, Florian Adamski was announced as the next CEO of Omnicom Media Group, bringing his experience from a previous role as CEO at OMD Worldwide.
The history of Omnicom is characterized by strategic mergers, leadership transitions, global expansions, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Through its journey, Omnicom has consistently adapted to industry changes and maintained its position as a major player in the advertising and marketing services sector.
