History
Oriental Land Co., Ltd. was established in 1960 as a real estate development company focused on developing the Tokyo Bay area. The company was initially involved in the construction of residential properties, commercial buildings, and office space. However, in the early 1980s, the company began to explore the possibility of developing a theme park in the Tokyo Bay area.
In 1983, Oriental Land Co. signed a license agreement with The Walt Disney Company for the development and operation of the Tokyo Disney Resort. This joint venture marked a significant milestone for The Walt Disney Company's international expansion of its parks and resorts.
The company began laying the groundwork for the Tokyo Disney Resort project in 1984 with the construction of large-scale facilities in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture. Work on the project began in 1990, and the Tokyo Disneyland theme park opened to the public on April 15, 1983, followed by the Tokyo DisneySea theme park on September 4, 2018.
The Tokyo Disney Resort has been enjoying considerable success since its opening and continues to be a major tourist destination in Japan. The resort has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years, including the addition of new attractions and entertainment offerings.
In addition to the Disney Parks, Oriental Land Co. also operates Ikspiari, a large shopping and entertainment complex adjacent to Tokyo Disney Resort. Ikspiari features a wide range of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, including a movie theater, bowling alley, and arcade.
In 2012, Oriental Land Co. opened the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Theater, featuring live shows and movies. This fourth E-ticket theater at Tokyo Disney Resort is located in Ikspiari and features state-of-the-art technology and special effects.
In 2014, the company opened New Chiba Station as part of its Tokyo Disney Resort Station complex. This new station provides convenient access to the Tokyo Disney Resort for visitors travelling by train.
Today, Oriental Land Co. continues to operate and develop the Tokyo Disney Resort, working closely with The Walt Disney Company to provide guests with a world-class theme park experience. The company has also expanded its operations to include a variety of other businesses, including hotels, retail, and entertainment.
