Pondicherry University

Pondicherry University (PU) is a central research university located in Kalapet, Puducherry, India. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, the university is overseen by the Vice President of India as Chancellor, with the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry as Chief Rector, and the President of India as Visitor. Its jurisdiction spans the Union Territories of Puducherry (comprising Pondicherry and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu), Mahé in Kerala, Yanam in Andhra Pradesh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, lending it a national character. The linguistic diversity of the region includes English, Tamil, French, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Oriya, Assamese, and Kannada.

The university offers several vocational programmes, including paramedical courses, leveraging on-site hospital facilities to enhance local skill sets. Its campus covers approximately 1,000 acres (400 hectares), facing the Bay of Bengal along the East Coast Road, and is accessible from Chennai (168 km) and Bengaluru (326 km).

Hostel facilities are available for both male and female students, with priority given to those from distant locations. A hostel for foreign students accommodates over 30 students, and girls receive rent-free accommodation. Physically challenged students benefit from free education, board, and lodging. The university provides complimentary transport on and off campus.

Under the vice-chancellorship of Prof. J. A. K. Tareen (2007–2012), the university achieved an 'A' grade and significant academic expansion, including 300 new faculty members and 22 new departments, alongside the establishment of new campuses in Karaikal and Andaman. It was ranked in the top 11 Indian universities in the first NIRF ranking.

With the motto "From Darkness, towards the Light!" (???? ?? ??????????? in Sanskrit), Pondicherry University is accredited with an 'A+' grade by NAAC and affiliated with several regulatory bodies. The university boasts a vibrant student body of 40,804, including undergraduates, postgraduates, and doctoral candidates. During this period, it achieved an 'A' grade accreditation from NAAC and expanded its academic footprint with the establishment of 22 new departments and campuses in Karaikal and Andaman. Regionally, it stands out in the Asian University Rankings, ranking #204 in Southern Asia and between 651-700 in the broader Asian context. Domestically, Pondicherry University has been highly rated by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), placing 87th overall in 2021 and 58th among the top universities in India. It has also achieved distinction as the 8th best Central University in India according to the NIRF Central University Ranking 2021. These accolades underscore Pondicherry University's commitment to academic excellence, sustainability initiatives, and its significant role in shaping higher education standards both nationally and internationally.

In 2024, MBA (Insurance Management) students secured placements with IFFCO Tokio, with 8 students placed at an annual package of INR 6 LPA as Management Trainees. According to the NIRF report for 2024, the university reported significant median package increases: INR 3.1 LPA for UG 3-year placements, and INR 6.5 LPA for both PG 2-year and PG Integrated 5-year placements in 2023.
