Regent University

Regent University is a private Christian university in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It was founded by Pat Robertson in 1977 as Christian Broadcasting Network University and changed its name to Regent University in 1990. Regent offers on-campus programs as well as distance education. 

Regent offers associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in over 70 courses of study. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Regent University, originally named Christian Broadcasting Network University, was conceived in 1977 under the visionary leadership of Pat Robertson, the founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN). Pat Robertson, who served as Chancellor of the university until his passing in 2023, aimed to establish a Christian institution of higher learning dedicated to providing quality education rooted in Christian faith and principles. In 1978, this vision became a reality as the university welcomed its inaugural class of seventy-seven students. At that time, the university leased classroom space in Chesapeake, Virginia.

The university's growth and expansion were swift. In 1980, Regent University celebrated its first commencement ceremony, marking a significant milestone in its history. The School of Education was established later that year, further diversifying the academic offerings. By 1980, the university relocated to its present campus in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where it would continue to flourish. Regent University proceeded to open various schools, including business, divinity, government, and law, in the following years.

In 1984, the university received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a significant achievement that underscored its commitment to academic excellence. In 1997, Regent University embraced the digital age by introducing online classes, expanding access to its educational programs. Additionally, the university briefly established a secondary campus in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1995, though it was later sold. 

The year 2000 marked the beginning of an undergraduate degree-completion program, initially known as the Center for Professional Studies, which would eventually evolve into the School of Undergraduate Studies and, in 2012, be renamed the College of Arts and Sciences. This growth and evolution solidified Regent University's position as a prominent institution of Christian higher education in the United States.

Business and Leadership: Regent's School of Business & Leadership offers programs in areas such as business administration, leadership, management, and entrepreneurship. Courses cover topics like organizational leadership, strategic management, marketing, and finance.

Divinity and Theology: The School of Divinity provides courses in theology, ministry, and biblical studies. Students can pursue degrees in divinity, Christian ministry, and practical theology, among others. Courses explore biblical interpretation, church history, pastoral counseling, and theological ethics.

Law: Regent University School of Law is known for its rigorous legal education. Courses include constitutional law, contracts, criminal law, and international law. Regent Law emphasizes Christian ethics and values in legal practice.

Education: The School of Education offers programs in various educational specialties, including curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, and special education. Courses focus on pedagogy, curriculum development, assessment, and educational policy.

Psychology and Counseling: Regent's psychology programs cover areas like clinical psychology, counseling, and human services. Courses delve into counseling techniques, psychological assessment, and ethical issues in counseling.

Communication and the Arts: The School of Communication & the Arts provides courses in communication, cinema-television, journalism, and digital media. Students can explore areas such as media production, journalism ethics, and digital storytelling.

Healthcare and Nursing: Regent's healthcare programs include nursing, healthcare management, and public health. Courses address topics like healthcare ethics, patient care, and healthcare administration.

Government and International Relations: The Robertson School of Government offers courses in government, public administration, and international relations. Students can study subjects like public policy, international diplomacy, and political theory.

Cybersecurity and Technology: Regent University is recognized for its cybersecurity programs. Courses in this field cover topics like cybersecurity management, ethical hacking, and information assurance.

Arts and Sciences: The College of Arts and Sciences provides foundational courses in subjects like mathematics, science, history, and literature. These courses are often part of general education requirements for undergraduate students.

U.S. News & World Report Rankings: Regent University's School of Business & Leadership has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report in various categories. Although not a globally ranked program, it has earned recognition for its online MBA programs, particularly in the "Best Online MBA Programs" and "Best Online MBA Programs for Veterans" categories.

Accreditation: Regent University has held accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges. Accreditation is an important recognition of the quality and standards of an institution's education programs.
