Summary

Rose Bruford College is a specialised higher education institution focused on performing arts. It is located in the London Borough of Bexley and offers degree programmes in acting, directing, theatre arts, stagecraft, and actor musicianship. The college was founded in 1950 by Rose Elizabeth Bruford, with support from notable figures such as poet laureate John Masefield and actors Laurence Olivier and Peggy Ashcroft, who were part of its early governance.

The college originally began as The Rose Bruford Training College of Speech and Drama. It was a pioneer in theatre education, introducing the first acting degree in 1976. The Kent Education Committee helped the college by leasing Lamorbey House, an 18th-century Grade II listed manor, for a nominal fee. Over time, the college expanded its campus, with significant construction completed in 2002, and developed research facilities including the Stanislavski Centre and the Clive Barker Library.

Rose Bruford College’s degrees were validated by the University of Manchester until it received degree-awarding powers in 2017, allowing it to award its own taught degrees. The college has a suburban campus and serves approximately 895 students as of the 2023/24 academic year, including 770 undergraduates and 125 postgraduates.

In 2014, it was reported that over 90% of its students came from state schools, and the college achieved a 90% satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey the same year. When the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts closed in April 2022, Rose Bruford College offered places to all of ALRA’s students.

The college has notable alumni, including actors Gary Oldman, Ray Fearon (the current president since November 2024), Bernardine Evaristo (former president and Booker Prize winner), Hayley Squires, and several others who have contributed to theatre, film, and television. Its faculty members are involved in academic journals related to performing arts, enhancing its research profile. The college reported an income of £11.9 million for the 2023/24 academic year and continues to focus on training creative talent for the theatre and performance industries.

History

Rose Bruford College was founded in 1950 by Rose Elizabeth Bruford, initially named The Rose Bruford Training College of Speech and Drama. Its establishment was supported by poet laureate John Masefield and actors Laurence Olivier and Peggy Ashcroft, who served on the Board of Governors. The college aimed to provide professional training in theatre and performance arts.

In its early period, the Kent Education Committee leased Lamorbey House, an 18th-century Grade II listed manor in Sidcup, to the college for a nominal fee, allowing it to establish a permanent campus. The college received grants that helped sustain its operations during the formative years. Over time, the institution expanded its physical facilities and course offerings.

In 1976, Rose Bruford College pioneered the first acting degree in the United Kingdom, marking a major development in performing arts education. The college’s degree programmes were initially validated by the University of Manchester. In 2017, it was granted teaching degree-awarding powers, enabling it to confer its own degrees.

The campus underwent significant expansion, including the construction of new buildings completed in 2002. The college also developed specialised research facilities, such as the Stanislavski Centre and the Clive Barker Library. Faculty members have contributed to the academic field through roles on editorial boards of performing arts journals.

By 2014, over 90% of the college’s students came from state schools, and it achieved a 90% overall satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey. In 2022, when the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA) closed, Rose Bruford College accepted all of ALRA’s students, ensuring continuity in their education.

As of 2023/24, the college enrolled approximately 895 students, with 770 undergraduates and 125 postgraduates. The college reported an income of £11.9 million for this academic year. Ray Fearon, an alumnus, became president in 2024, succeeding Bernardine Evaristo.

Up to 2025, Rose Bruford College continues to provide specialised training in acting, directing, theatre arts, and stagecraft, maintaining its focus on preparing students for careers in performance and theatre industries.

Courses

Rose Bruford College offers a range of degree programmes focused on the performing arts, including acting, directing, theatre arts, stagecraft, and actor musicianship. These courses are designed to provide both practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for careers in theatre, film, television, and related industries.

The Acting course covers all aspects of performance, including voice training, movement, character study, and audition techniques. Students learn to develop their skills through practical workshops, rehearsals, and live performances. The course aims to prepare students for professional acting work across different media.

The Actor Musicianship programme combines acting with musical skills, training students to perform as both actors and musicians. This course covers voice, instruments, music theory, and stage performance. It prepares graduates to work in theatre productions where musical ability is required alongside acting.

Directing courses focus on teaching students how to interpret scripts, guide actors, and oversee productions. The curriculum includes directing techniques, theatre history, dramaturgy, and leadership skills. Students gain experience by directing live performances and participating in collaborative projects.

Theatre Arts degrees cover broader areas of theatre production and management. This includes lighting, sound design, costume, set design, and stage management. Students learn how to work behind the scenes to support productions and develop technical skills essential for theatre and live events.

Stagecraft courses focus on the technical aspects of theatre, such as construction, rigging, and scenic art. The course trains students to design and build sets, operate lighting and sound equipment, and manage stage logistics.

The college also offers postgraduate programmes that provide advanced study and research opportunities in these fields. These include Master's degrees in Acting, Theatre and Performance, and Theatre Directing.

All courses combine practical workshops, academic study, and industry placements. Students benefit from access to the college’s facilities, including rehearsal spaces, theatres, and specialist libraries such as the Stanislavski Centre and the Clive Barker Library. The college maintains links with professional theatre companies, enabling students to gain real-world experience and build networks in the performing arts sector.
