It was established in 2008 as a result of the reorganization of RAO UES (Unified Energy System of Russia). The company is involved in the distribution of electric power and operates through interregional and regional distribution grid companies (IDGCs/RDGCs), research and development institutes, design and construction institutes, and construction and sales entities.

Rosseti's property portfolio includes interests in 44 joint-stock subsidiaries and affiliates, including 11 IDGCs and 5 RDGCs. The government is the controlling shareholder, owning 53.69% of the company as of March 31, 2011. The company's operations cover a wide range of voltage types, from 0.4 kV to 220 kV, and its power network spans over 2.1 million kilometres, making it one of the world's largest electric grid companies in terms of network spread and customers.

In terms of financials, Rosseti reported revenue of $15.9 billion, operating income of $2.34 billion, net income of $1.63 billion, total assets of $103 billion, and total equity of $24.5 billion in 2019.

History

The history of Rossetti can be traced back to the reorganization of RAO UES (Unified Energy System of Russia), which occurred in 2008. RAO UES was a vertically integrated energy holding company that controlled the majority of Russia's electricity generation, transmission, and distribution assets. As part of the restructuring process, RAO UES was divided into several separate companies, including Rosseti.

Rosseti was established as a Russian power company with a focus on electricity distribution. Its full name is PAO Rosseti, where "PAO" stands for Public Joint Stock Company. The company operates through interregional and regional distribution grid companies (IDGCs/RDGCs), research and development institutes, design and construction institutes, and construction and sales entities.

The purpose of creating Rosseti was to enhance the efficiency and reliability of electricity distribution in Russia by separating the distribution function from the generation and transmission segments of the energy industry. This reorganization aimed to promote competition, improve infrastructure, and modernize the country's electricity system.

As a result of the reorganization, Rosseti became responsible for the distribution of electric power in various regions of Russia. The company comprises interregional and regional distribution grid companies, which are subsidiaries located in different constituent entities of the Russian Federation.

Since its establishment, Rosseti has focused on expanding and modernizing the electricity distribution grid. The company has invested significant funds in developing electric grid facilities, including the construction of new substations, power transmission lines, and other infrastructure. Rosseti has also emphasized the implementation of technological innovations to improve the efficiency, reliability, and quality of electricity distribution.

Rosseti has become one of the leading electric power companies in Russia and globally. It is recognized for its extensive network spread, serving millions of customers, and its commitment to energy conservation, efficiency, environmental protection, and occupational safety.

In terms of ownership, the Federal Agency for State Property Management holds the majority stake in Rosseti, with an 88% ownership share. The company is also listed on the Moscow Exchange, the primary stock exchange in Russia, under the ticker symbol MCX: RSTI.

Throughout its history, Rosseti has played a crucial role in ensuring the reliable transmission and distribution of electricity in Russia, supporting economic development and improving the quality of life for people across the country.
