History
Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET) was established in 1989 by the Government of India under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), with a vision to provide high-quality technical education and research in India. Located in Longowal, Sangrur, Punjab, the institute was set up as a tribute to the memory of the late Harchand Singh Longowal, a Sikh political leader, who was assassinated in 1985. His contributions to the peaceful resolution of tensions in Punjab were recognised by both the Government of India and the people of the region. The institute was created under the Rajiv Longowal Punjab Accord, as a fitting memorial to his efforts toward peace and reconciliation.
SLIET's primary aim was to cater to the growing demand for technical education and to equip students with the necessary skills to contribute effectively to the industrial and economic development of the country. The foundation stone for the institute was laid in 1991 by Shri Arjun Singh, the then Honourable Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India, and it was formally inaugurated on December 20, 1991. The institute was initially affiliated with Punjab Technical University and began offering certificate and diploma programmes from 1991 onwards. By 1993, degree programmes were introduced, further expanding the scope of education at SLIET.
In the years that followed, the institute continued to grow both in terms of its academic offerings and its infrastructure. Postgraduate courses were introduced in 2003, and all degree programmes were accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in the same year. SLIET’s commitment to excellence in technical education was further reaffirmed when the institute underwent an impact assessment and review conducted by Educational Consultants India Ltd. (EdCIL) in 2004.
In 2007, SLIET was granted the status of a "Deemed to be University," marking a significant milestone in its journey. This transition was essential in empowering the institution to provide a broader range of academic qualifications, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Over the years, the institute’s reputation grew, and it became recognised for its contribution to both the academic and professional growth of students, as well as for its research activities in the fields of engineering and technology.
The sprawling campus of SLIET, spread over 451 acres of land provided by the Punjab government, is one of its key features. The lush green campus is designed to create a conducive environment for learning and research, offering a peaceful and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for both students and faculty. The institute is fully funded by the Government of India, and it is an autonomous body controlled by the SLIET Society.
SLIET has consistently been a beacon of technical education in the region, offering various undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programmes across diverse fields of engineering, technology, and sciences. It has also ventured into interdisciplinary areas such as rural development, educational planning, and management sciences. The institute's academic programmes are complemented by a strong emphasis on practical training, entrepreneurship, and close collaborations with industries, which has allowed students to gain valuable hands-on experience.
In 2019, SLIET received the prestigious "DELL College of the Year" award by Dell Technologies, further attesting to its excellence in education and innovation. Today, the institute stands as a leading educational institution, continuously working towards its mission of providing flexible and modular education that adapts to the evolving needs of society.
