History
Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology was established in 1987 by the Jeppiaar Educational Trust in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Originally known as Sathyabama Engineering College, it was founded with a vision to provide quality technical education in the region. The institution quickly gained a reputation for its robust academic programmes and became a preferred choice for engineering aspirants in South India.
Throughout the 1990s, Sathyabama Engineering College expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure. Initially affiliated with Anna University, it further strengthened its academic standards. The institution consistently received high rankings and positive reviews for its educational programmes, faculty, and facilities. In the early 2000s, Sathyabama sought to broaden its academic scope beyond engineering, introducing new programmes in the fields of science, technology, and management. This expansion necessitated a transition from a college to a university-level institution.
In 2001, Sathyabama Engineering College was granted Deemed University status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. With this status, it was renamed Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, reflecting its broadened academic scope. This change marked a significant milestone in the institution’s history, allowing it greater autonomy in designing curricula, conducting examinations, and awarding degrees. During this period, Sathyabama made substantial investments in infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries, and research facilities. The institution also began forming alliances with leading universities and research organisations both nationally and internationally, establishing a strong focus on research and development.
In the 2010s, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology continued its trajectory of growth and excellence. It achieved accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which awarded it an ‘A++’ grade. These accolades were a testament to the institution’s commitment to quality education and continuous improvement. In 2018, Sathyabama was classified as a Category I University by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the UGC (Categorization of Universities (only) for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018. This classification allowed the institution greater freedom in academic and administrative matters, further enhancing its ability to innovate and excel.
Sathyabama has established itself as a leader in innovation and research, consistently ranked among the top institutions in India for innovation by the ATAL Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA). The institution has also been recognised globally by Times Higher Education and QS rankings. One of its landmark achievements was the launch of its own satellite, “SATHYABAMASAT,” in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on 22nd June 2016. This milestone highlighted Sathyabama’s capability in cutting-edge research and its contribution to space research.
