History
The airport opened on March 28, 1999, replacing the previous Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. The first aircraft to land was Japan Airlines Flight 56, which had departed from Narita International Airport. The airport quickly gained a reputation for its high efficiency, and was one of the first airports in the world to offer international flights from day one. In 2000, it handled 24 million passengers, a number that doubled within two years.
