Summary
History
Shentel was founded in 1902 as Shenandoah Valley Telephone Company in Edinburg, Virginia. It was the first exchange in the valley to provide long-distance service and the first to establish a direct connection to Winchester, Virginia in 1918. In the 1920s and 1930s, the company grew and expanded, acquiring other exchanges and adding additional long-distance routes. In the 1960s and 70s, the company went through several name changes, eventually becoming Shenandoah Telecommunications Company in 1981.
