Shimano was founded in 1921 by Shozaburo Shimano and originally produced only single-speed freewheel hubs for bicycles. Over time, the company quickly expanded, producing derailleurs, three-speed hubs, and many other components for road, mountain, and touring bicycles. Shimano also produces fishing tackle, rowing equipment, and tackle boxes.
