History

Sri Venkateswara University (SVU), located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India, was established in 1954 to address the educational needs of the Rayalaseema region. The university was founded by Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and Siram Govindarajulu Naidu, the first Vice-Chancellor of the university. The establishment was made possible through a lease of land from Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, the governing body of the famous Lord Venkateswara temple, and the university is named after the deity.

From its early days, Sri Venkateswara University was committed to providing quality higher education. It began with just one college and six departments. Over the years, it has expanded into a prominent educational institution, now recognised as one of the leading universities in Andhra Pradesh. The university has grown into the second-largest university in the state, comprising five constituent colleges: the College of Arts, College of Sciences, College of Commerce, Management & Computer Science, College of Pharmacy, and College of Engineering. In total, it accommodates 52 departments offering 88 academic programmes.

The university's progress was further marked by the establishment of the College of Engineering, an autonomous institution laid by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on 13 October 1959. This college has since become a cornerstone of SVU’s engineering and technology education. Additionally, the Department of Physics at SVU is home to one of India's four national research facilities, the MST Radar Facility at Gadanki, commissioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

SVU has earned national and international recognition for its academic and research excellence. The university is consistently ranked by prestigious ranking agencies such as QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education, and the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Notably, the university was ranked between 351-400 in Asia by QS in 2023, and its engineering department ranked between 201-300 in India by NIRF in 2024.

In terms of research, Sri Venkateswara University is renowned for its contributions, with over 16,000 citations between 2014 and 2019. The university has been involved in various high-impact research projects, generating substantial funds through consultancy and collaborations with national and international research bodies. Several departments of the university have received special grants from the UGC, DST, and other agencies, fostering advancements in fields such as nano-satellite technology, material science, and environmental sciences.

The university’s infrastructure has also evolved significantly, with continued development of new buildings, laboratories, and facilities, ensuring that SVU remains competitive at both national and global levels. It also provides modern amenities, including a Wi-Fi connected campus, a digital library, and a comprehensive hostel system, catering to the needs of both students and research scholars.

The university is governed by the Sri Venkateswara University Act, originally established in 1954 and amended over time. The governance structure includes an Executive Council, which replaced the earlier Board of Management. The Executive Council meets quarterly, and it is responsible for overseeing the academic and administrative functions of the university.

Through these decades of progress, Sri Venkateswara University has continued to play a vital role in shaping the educational landscape of Andhra Pradesh and has become a centre of excellence in higher education. Its commitment to fostering quality education, conducting cutting-edge research, and promoting industry collaborations remains central to its mission and vision.
