History

Star Micronics was founded in 1947 in Japan as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of thermal printers, which were initially developed and manufactured for Sharp Corporation. In 1975, the company began producing its own printers and dot matrix printer mechanisms. In 1985, Star Micronics was the first to develop a thermal printing mechanism that could be driven by an 8-bit processor. This technology revolutionized the point-of-sale (POS) industry, enabling POS terminals to print directly from a computer. In 2004, Star Micronics America, Inc. was formed as the North American regional headquarters for Star Micronics Co., Ltd., Japan.
