History
Sysco Corporation is an American multinational corporation that distributes food products, smallwares, kitchen equipment, and tabletop items to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments, and other customers who prepare meals away from home. The company was founded in 1969 by John F. Baugh and Harry Rosenthal in Houston, Texas, and is currently headquartered in Houston.
Sysco originally stood for Systems and Services Company, but the name was later changed to Sysco Corporation. The company began as a regional distributor of food products in Houston, Texas, and quickly expanded to other cities in Texas and eventually throughout the United States. Sysco's growth was driven by several key acquisitions, including the purchase of Houston-based Frost-Parker in 1973, which gave the company a significant presence in the Gulf Coast region.
In the 1980s, Sysco continued to expand its operations, acquiring several food distribution companies and expanding into new geographic markets. In 1988, the company went public, and its stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. By the end of the decade, Sysco had become the largest foodservice distributor in the United States.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Sysco continued to expand both organically and through acquisitions. In 1993, the company acquired the foodservice distribution division of the Wetterau supermarket chain, which added several new markets to its distribution network. In 1998, Sysco acquired Canadian foodservice distributor Harmony Foods, which marked the company's entry into the Canadian market. In the 2000s, Sysco made several acquisitions to expand its presence in Europe and Latin America.
Today, Sysco is one of the largest companies in the foodservice industry, with operations in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. The company has approximately 66,000 employees and serves more than 600,000 customer locations worldwide. Sysco's annual sales exceed $60 billion, making it one of the largest foodservice distributors in the world.
