History

T-Mobile US, Inc., one of the largest wireless carriers in the United States, traces its origins to the establishment of VoiceStream Wireless PCS in 1994. VoiceStream was initially set up as a subsidiary of Western Wireless Corporation, providing GSM-based wireless communication services. In 1999, VoiceStream was spun off from Western Wireless and became an independent company.

In 2008, T-Mobile US further expanded its operations by acquiring SunCom Wireless Holdings Inc., which added 1.1 million customers to its already growing customer base. This acquisition was a significant milestone in T-Mobile's journey to becoming one of the largest wireless carriers in the United States.

In September 2001, the company was renamed T-Mobile USA Inc. by its parent company, Deutsche Telekom, further cementing its position as a leading mobile service provider. Two years later, in February 2008, T-Mobile US completed the acquisition of SunCom Wireless Holdings Inc., further bolstering its market presence and customer base.

In 2011, T-Mobile UK joined forces with France Télécom's UK mobile-network provider, Orange (UK), to form a joint venture, resulting in the formation of the UK's largest mobile network operator, called EE. This strategic move by T-Mobile US was aimed at expanding its global reach and market share.

In 2013, T-Mobile US introduced a major overhaul of its plan structure, which was marketed under the slogan "the Un-carrier." This move was aimed at differentiating itself from other wireless carriers in the market by offering customers greater flexibility and transparency.

By 2015, T-Mobile US had surpassed Sprint to become the third-largest wireless carrier in the United States, a significant achievement in the company's history. However, in 2017, T-Mobile US and Sprint jointly announced that they had ended merger talks due to disagreements on terms.

In 2020, T-Mobile US successfully merged with Sprint, consolidating its position as a leading carrier in the United States and gaining access to valuable mid-band spectrum assets. This merger enabled T-Mobile to offer its "Ultra Capacity 5G" network, covering millions of customers with high-speed connectivity. Assurance Wireless, a federal Lifeline program service, also became part of T-Mobile's offerings through the merger.

By 2023, T-Mobile had expanded its customer base to over 127 million, making it the second-largest wireless carrier in the United States. It also acquired Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile in 2024 to strengthen its position in the prepaid market.
