History

The genesis of TISS dates back to 1936 when the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, led by Sir Dorabji Tata, established the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work in Mumbai, Maharashtra. This initiative aimed to address India’s socio-economic challenges through education and research. Under the directorship of Dr Clifford Manshardt, the school initially focused on training social workers to combat pressing issues like poverty, inequality, and social injustice, with a strong emphasis on fieldwork and practical experience. In 1944, it was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

After India gained independence in 1947, TISS expanded its scope and influence. It gained autonomy from the University of Mumbai in 1964 and was declared a deemed university by the Government of India. This period saw TISS broaden its academic offerings beyond social work to include programmes in social sciences, development studies, public health, and rural development. It emerged as a leading research institution, significantly contributing to policy analysis and development interventions in India.

During this era, TISS established international collaborations with universities and organisations, enriching its academic programmes and research initiatives. These partnerships facilitated knowledge exchange and global exposure for students and faculty. TISS diversified its academic offerings, introducing new programmes in areas such as human rights, gender studies, environmental studies, and urban planning. It became increasingly involved in advocacy and activism for social justice and human rights, with faculty and alumni playing pivotal roles in policy formulation and grassroots movements.

In the 21st century, TISS embraced digital technologies to enhance teaching, research, and administration. The integration of online learning platforms, digital libraries, and e-resources facilitated remote education and research collaboration. TISS expanded its footprint by establishing regional campuses in Tuljapur, Guwahati, and Hyderabad, catering to diverse regional needs and fostering decentralised development. These centres offered specialised programmes and research projects tailored to local contexts.

Throughout its history, TISS has remained committed to its founding vision of promoting social transformation through education, research, and advocacy. The institute continues to address contemporary challenges such as globalisation, urbanisation, climate change, and social inequality. Its alumni occupy leadership positions in academia, government, NGOs, and international organisations, reflecting TISS's enduring impact on India's social sciences landscape.
