Tbilisi State Academy of Arts

The Art Academy of Georgia was established on March 8, 1922, by order of the People's Commissariat on Education. Initially, four faculties were created: painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and architecture. In 1927, a department of ceramics was added. In the same year, Mose Toidze founded an art school to prepare young artists aspiring to enter the Academy. The institution is housed in the historic former mansion of Vardan Arshakuni, which was reconstructed and refurbished in 1902.

Since its inception, the academy is distinguished by its faculty of artists and educators. Early teachers included prominent figures such as Gigo Gabashvili, Iakob Nikoladze, Eugene Lanceray, and Joseph Sharlemagne, among others. Over the years, the roster of distinguished instructors has included both local and international masters who contributed significantly to the development of Georgian art. Their influence helped shape the academy as a vital center for artistic training and cultural development.

The Tbilisi State Academy of Arts occupies the historic “House of Arshakuni,” a building designed by architect G. Ivanov in 1856. The interiors feature the distinctive Qajar artistic style, crafted by Iranian artisans working in Tbilisi. Historically, the building housed multiple artistic and cultural spaces, including Maria Perini’s ballet studio, the studio of Henryk Hryniewski, Gigo Gabashvili’s art studio, and family flats of the Kobulashvili family. Over the years, additional structures and renovations have expanded and modernized the academy’s facilities.

In 1972, a new ten-story academy building was constructed under the guidance of architects A. Kurdiani, M. Chkhikvadze, L. Sumbadze, and contractor D. Kajaia. This modern addition significantly enhanced the campus. Later, in 2005–2006, the new building was restored and refurbished by Cartu Bank, ensuring the preservation of its architectural heritage while providing updated facilities for students and staff. The academy continues to serve as a prominent hub for arts education in Georgia.

The Tbilisi State Academy of Arts offers diverse courses in artistic disciplines. One of its flagship programs is in Fine Arts, which provides students with comprehensive training in painting, sculpture, and drawing. This course emphasizes both traditional techniques and contemporary practices, encouraging students to develop their unique artistic voice. Students engage in rigorous studio work, participate in exhibitions, and learn about art history, enabling them to create meaningful and technically proficient artworks. Another highly sought-after course is Design, which includes specializations such as graphic design, industrial design, and multimedia art. The curriculum integrates modern design software, branding strategies, and user experience principles, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to meet industry demands. Collaborative projects and internships with local businesses are integral to this course.

The academy’s Architecture program is also among its most popular offerings, attracting students interested in urban planning, building design, and sustainable architecture. This course emphasizes both technical proficiency and artistic creativity, with a curriculum that covers architectural theory, construction technology, and environmental considerations. Students work on studio projects that challenge them to develop innovative solutions for contemporary architectural challenges. The program encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and often involves field visits and workshops, fostering a holistic understanding of architecture’s role within society. 

The Tbilisi State Academy of Arts does not offer a Global MBA program or hold rankings in MBA rankings such as those published by QS, Financial Times, or The Economist. The academy focuses on arts education, including fine arts, design, architecture, and related disciplines, rather than business or management programs.
