Summary

TD SYNNEX, established in 2021 through the merger of Synnex and Tech Data, stands as a prominent American IT distribution company with an extensive global presence spanning over 100 countries and boasting a workforce of 22,000. Helmed by former Tech Data CEO Rich Hume, the company operates with a distinct ownership structure, with former Synnex shareholders holding 55% and Apollo Global Management, Tech Data's previous owner, possessing the remaining 45%.

This strategic amalgamation positions TD SYNNEX as the largest IT distributor globally, boasting a combined revenue of $59.8 billion following the merger of Tech Data and Synnex. This financial prowess surpasses industry competitors, such as Ingram Micro, reflecting the company's formidable standing in the IT distribution sector. Under the leadership of CEO Rich Hume and Executive Chair Dennis Polk, TD SYNNEX continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence and innovation, as evidenced by its recent appointment of Patrick Zammit as Chief Operating Officer in November 2023, reinforcing its position as a key player in the dynamic IT distribution landscape.

History

Synnex, initially established as a technology hardware distributor, evolved into a comprehensive provider of products and logistics services, specializing in business process outsourcing and contract assembly within the IT industry. Over the years, the company expanded its global reach and service offerings. In 2009, Synnex acquired Jack of All Games from Take-Two Interactive, followed by the acquisition of the managed business solutions division of e4e in 2010. Noteworthy milestones include partnerships with IBM and Zettaset in 2012 for Hadoop-based analytics and the acquisition of IBM's worldwide customer care business process outsourcing in 2013.

Founded in 1974 by Edward C. Raymund in Clearwater, FL, Tech Data Corporation initially focused on marketing data processing supplies for mini and mainframe computers. In 1983, under the leadership of Edward's son, Steven A. Raymund, Tech Data transitioned into a full-line national distributor of personal computer products. Steve A. Raymund succeeded his father as CEO in 1986, marking the same year Tech Data went public on NASDAQ. Over two decades, the company expanded globally by acquiring 18 companies, including ParityPlus, Computer 2000 AG, Azlan Group PLC, and others. In 2013, Tech Data faced a setback when an accounting error led to a loss of nearly 27 million euros in profit.

In 2016, Tech Data made a significant move by acquiring the Technology Solutions operating group from Avnet, Inc., strengthening its position in the industry. Apollo Global Management acquired Tech Data for approximately $6 billion in November 2019, leading to the completion of the deal on June 30, 2020.

In a significant move in 2017, Synnex acquired the North and Latin American operations of Westcon-Comstor. The company continued its expansion strategy by merging with Convergys in 2018, forming Concentrix. Synnex's prominence was reflected in its placement at number 158 on the Fortune 500 listing in 2019. The year 2020 marked a pivotal moment as Synnex announced plans to separate Synnex and Concentrix into two publicly traded entities, completing the spinoff in December. However, the company faced challenges in 2020 when it became associated with the Republican National Convention's server hack. In March 2021, Synnex entered a significant merger with Tech Data, solidifying its position in the industry with Synnex shareholders receiving 55% of the merged company.
