TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) was founded in 1998 by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) with a focus on academic programs related to energy, environment, and sustainability. It attained "Deemed to be University" status from the University Grants Commission in 1999. Located in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, its campus exemplifies modern green building concepts.

TERI SAS is affiliated with the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It offers a range of postgraduate and doctoral courses and holds accreditation with a B++ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2020, it secured the 70th position overall.

TERI SAS offers a diverse array of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and diploma programs in fields such as environmental studies, economics, renewable energy management, and more. Its faculty members are actively engaged in research, development and dialogue with partner organizations and educational institutes, the government, alumni and the society at large.

The university has established academic collaborations with international universities like Yale University and Freie University of Berlin, facilitating joint research and exchange programs. Scholarship programs supported by organizations like Sindicatum Climate Change Foundation, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. are also available, enhancing the educational experience and global perspectives for students.

The TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) started its journey in 1998 with a clear mission: to provide academic programmes supporting TERI's research on energy, environment, and sustainability. In 1999, TERI SAS gained recognition from the University Grants Commission, becoming a "Deemed to be University." This recognition showed its dedication to offering top-quality education while encouraging fresh perspectives on relevant topics. Regular interactions with researchers, scientists, and academics became central to the university's culture, enriching students' learning experiences.

The first graduation ceremony in 2006 was a significant moment for TERI SAS, awarding doctoral and master's degrees to deserving students. Nandan Nilekani, CEO and MD of Infosys Technologies, highlighted the importance of sustainable development in higher education, a core aspect of the university's curriculum.
Originally located at TERI's premises in the Darbari Seth Block of India Habitat Centre, TERI SAS moved to its current campus in Vasant Kunj in 2008. This shift to a "green campus" reflected the institution's commitment to academic excellence and environmental sustainability. The new campus, designed to support learning and showcase modern green building concepts, provided an ideal environment for students to excel.

Recognising the value of international perspectives, TERI SAS formed partnerships with prestigious universities abroad. Collaborative agreements with institutions such as Yale University and Freie University of Berlin aimed to facilitate exchanges of students, faculty, knowledge, and resources. These initiatives broadened students' and faculty members' horizons, exposing them to diverse ideas and approaches in their fields of study.

Financial support from various organisations further strengthened TERI SAS's efforts. Scholarship programmes funded by entities like the Sindicatum Climate Change Foundation, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. allowed deserving students to pursue their academic goals. Additionally, the establishment of The Coca-Cola Department of Regional Water Studies in 2013, generously supported by The Coca Cola Foundation, demonstrated the university's commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges.

TERI SAS's dedication to excellence and innovation in education has been acknowledged by regulatory bodies and ranking agencies. At the undergraduate level, TERI SAS provides innovative programs such as a four-year UG Programme in Environmental Studies (B.Sc. Honours/ Honours with Research), and Data Science, Economics, and Business Administration (B.B.A.). These programs offer a strong foundation in their respective disciplines while integrating research and practical experiences.

For postgraduate students, TERI SAS offers a diverse range of master's programs, including an M.Tech in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management, Urban Development Management, and an M.B.A. in Sustainability Management. Additionally, students can pursue master's degrees in specialized fields such as Energy Studies and Management, Biotechnology (Plant/Microbial), Climate Science and Policy, Economics, Environmental Studies and Resource Management, Geoinformatics, Water Science and Governance, Public Policy and Sustainable Development, and Sustainable Development Practice. These programs provide in-depth knowledge and skills tailored to emerging needs in the sustainability and development sectors.

TERI SAS also offers doctoral programs for advanced research in thematic areas like Bioresources and Biotechnology, Business Sustainability, Energy and Environment, Natural Resources Management, Policy Studies, Water Science and Governance, and Legal Studies. These programs foster cutting-edge research and innovation to address pressing issues in sustainability and related fields.

Furthermore, the institution provides diploma and certificate courses, including a Senior Management Programme in CSR & Sustainable Development, a PG Diploma in Public Policy and Sustainable Development, and one-year PG Diploma programs in Renewable Energy Management and Urban Development Management. These short-term programs offer specialized training and skill enhancement opportunities for professionals seeking to advance their careers in sustainability and related sectors.

According to the NIRF report of 2023, Teri School of Advanced Studies had major recruiters including IHS Markit, SOCIAL Alpha, SG Analytics, TTC, sociometrik, Foundation, THE URBAN LAB, Dalmia Bharat Group, and Microenergy Credits. A total of 129 out of 207 students secured placements. Moreover, for postgraduate (2-year) programs, the median package offered during placements in 2022 stood at INR 7 LPA.
