History
The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) was established in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar, a notable Indian industrialist and philanthropist, under the Thapar Educational Trust. The institute was initially set up as an affiliated college of Panjab University, Chandigarh, with the aim of providing high-quality engineering education to contribute to India’s technological and scientific progress. The early years of TIET were marked by the establishment of undergraduate programmes in core engineering disciplines such as Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. The curriculum was designed to balance theoretical knowledge with practical skills, supported by a faculty comprising distinguished scholars and industry experts.
The 1980s and 1990s saw significant expansion at TIET. New undergraduate courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Chemical Engineering were introduced to meet the growing demand for specialised engineering education. Postgraduate programmes were also launched, enhancing the institute's academic portfolio. This period witnessed substantial development in campus infrastructure, including the establishment of modern laboratories, workshops, and research facilities. These enhancements enabled students and faculty to engage in cutting-edge research, attracting talented students from across the country and bolstering the institute’s reputation.
A major milestone in TIET’s history came in 1985 when it was granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. This autonomy allowed the institute to innovate its academic programmes, design its curriculum, and implement flexible academic policies. The institute also established collaborative programmes with leading international universities, enhancing its global standing. In 2007, TIET was conferred the status of a deemed-to-be-university by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. This transition allowed TIET to award its degrees and expand its research initiatives, providing greater academic freedom and resources.
Since the 2010s, TIET has experienced rapid advancements and global collaborations. The institute has established partnerships with several leading universities worldwide, including Trinity College Dublin, University of Waterloo, and Tel Aviv University. These collaborations have led to student exchange programmes, joint research projects, and dual degree offerings. The institute has also focused on fostering entrepreneurship and innovation through the Thapar Entrepreneurship Centre, which supports start-up ventures and nurtures an entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus. Initiatives like hackathons, incubation programmes, and industry-academia partnerships have been introduced to promote practical problem-solving skills among students.
TIET’s 250-acre campus in Patiala is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including modern classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, extensive library resources, residential accommodation for students and faculty, sports complexes, and recreational facilities. This comprehensive infrastructure provides a holistic educational environment, fostering both academic and personal growth.
