History
Truist Financial Corporation, formerly known as BB&T Corporation and Branch Banking and Trust Company, is an American bank holding company created in 2019 through the merger of BB&T and SunTrust Banks. With the merger completed, Truist Financial Corporation is the 6th largest bank and the 8th largest bank holding company in the United States, with offices in 15 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The two predecessor bank holding companies were founded in the early 19th century. BB&T was founded in 1872. SunTrust Banks was founded as The Trust Company of Georgia in 1891. The two companies had a total asset size of $450 billion at the time of the merger. In October 2018, BB&T and SunTrust announced that they had reached an agreement to merge, following the approval by the boards of both companies. The merger resulted in the creation of Truist Financial on December 6, 2019, after BB&T was acquired by SunTrust in an all-stock merger, creating the sixth largest U.S. bank holding company. The merger was approved by the boards of both companies in June 2019, as well as by the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The merger was finalized on December 6, 2019. As a result of the merger, BB&T's operations shifted to the Truist name and SunTrust's branding was renamed to "Truist Bank," both sites operate under the updated Truist Bank name. The merged company has established its headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina and will operate under a new brand name, Truist.
