History

Tsinghua University, one of China's most prestigious and influential universities, has a rich and complex history spanning over a century.

Tsinghua was founded in 1911, originally as "Tsing Hua Imperial College," with the mission of preparing Chinese students to study in the United States. The school was established by the government of the Qing Dynasty and was overseen by an American principal, Paul Monroe, who hired American and Chinese professors to teach a curriculum that emphasized both Chinese and Western cultures.

The school was renamed "Tsing Hua College" in 1912 and the university section was founded in 1925. The name "National Tsing Hua University" was adopted in 1928, and by that time, the university had 16 departments across four schools: Liberal Arts, Law, Sciences, and Engineering.

During this time, Tsinghua scholars like Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque, and Zhao Yuanren, who were renowned as the "Four Tutors" in the Institute of Chinese Classics, advocated for the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, and the ancient and modern. This belief had a profound impact on Tsinghua's later development.

In 1937, during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, National Tsing Hua University, National Peking University, and Nankai University merged to form Lin-shih-ta-hsueh, which was later renamed the National South-West Associated University in 1938 after moving to Kunming. The university returned to its original location in Beijing in 1946 after the war.

In 1952, three years after the founding of the People's Republic of China, a nationwide restructuring of institutes of higher education began, and Tsinghua University became a multidisciplinary polytechnic university specializing in training engineers. Jiang Nanxiang was appointed as President by the Ministry of Education in November of that year.

Since 1978, Tsinghua University has strengthened its teaching in sciences, economic management, humanities, and law. In 1984, the university established the first graduate school in China, and the School of Economic Management was formed out of the existing Department of management engineering. The School of Sciences also resumed on the basis of science departments. The first School of Continuing Education in China opened in 1985.

In the following years, Tsinghua continued to expand its academic offerings, establishing schools of architecture, law, information science and technology, mechanical engineering, public policy and management, medicine, journalism and communication, aerospace, and many others.

In 1999, Tsinghua opened the School of Arts and Design by merging with the Central Academy of Arts and Design. In 2012, the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China (PBC) merged into Tsinghua University as Tsinghua University PBC School of Finance. In 2015, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established, and Schwarzman College was established.

Today, Tsinghua University is a world-leading comprehensive university that offers subject areas in engineering, science, economics, management, art, medicine, philosophy, law, literature, history, and education. In 1999, Tsinghua University opened the School of Arts and Design by merging with the Central Academy of Arts and Design. In the same year, the Academy of Arts and Design was also established by merging several existing departments. This marked a significant milestone in the development of Tsinghua University, as it expanded its offerings to include subjects in art and design, and began to develop its reputation in these areas.

In 2000, Tsinghua University established the School of Civil Engineering, which has since become one of the top civil engineering schools in China. The same year, the university also established the School of Public Policy and Management, which has become one of the leading institutions in China for the study of public policy and management.

Over the following years, Tsinghua University continued to expand and develop its offerings in a variety of fields. In 2001, the university established the School of Medicine, which has since become one of the top medical schools in China. In 2002, the School of Journalism and Communication was established, offering programs in journalism, communication, and media studies.

In 2004, the School of Aerospace was established, offering programs in aeronautical engineering, astronautical engineering, and aviation engineering. In the same year, Tsinghua University also established the Tsinghua SEM-Boya Corporate Social Responsibility Research Center, which has become a leading centre for research on corporate social responsibility in China.

In 2006, Peking Union Medical College was officially merged with Tsinghua University, becoming the Peking Union Medical College (Division of Medicine, Tsinghua University). This merger has helped to further strengthen the university's offerings in the field of medicine.

In 2008, Tsinghua University established the School of Marxism, offering programs in Marxism, Leninism, and Mao Zedong Thought. In 2009, the School of Life Sciences was established, offering programs in biological sciences, biochemistry, and biotechnology.

In 2011, Tsinghua University celebrated its centenary, marking 100 years of education and research excellence. The same year, the university established the School of Environment, offering programs in environmental science, environmental engineering, and environmental management.

In 2012, the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China (PBC) merged into Tsinghua University as Tsinghua University PBC School of Finance, strengthening the university's offerings in finance and economics. In 2017, Tsinghua University officially released its "Double First-Class (First-Class University & First-Class Disciplines)" development plan, committing to further developing its offerings in a variety of fields and becoming a world-class institution for higher education and research.
