History

The Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) is a public research university in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was founded on August 12, 1821, under the name Universidad de Buenos Aires, making it one of the oldest universities in South America.

Initially, the university only had four faculties: Law, Medicine, Mathematics and Philosophy. Over time, more faculties were added, including Architecture, Engineering, Economics, and Social Sciences, among others.

Throughout its history, the UBA has been a center of intellectual and political activity in Argentina, playing a key role in the country's cultural, scientific and political development. It has been a breeding ground for generations of Argentine intellectuals, politicians, scientists, and artists, as well as a source of important scientific and technological advances.

The university has had a turbulent history, marked by periods of political upheaval and repression. During the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983, many professors and students were persecuted, tortured, and killed. The UBA played an important role in the resistance against the dictatorship, and many of its members were part of the student and worker movements that fought for democracy.

Despite these difficulties, the UBA has remained a leading institution of higher education in Argentina and the region. Today, it is the largest university in the country, with over 328,000 students and 13 faculties. The UBA is also one of the most prestigious universities in Latin America, with a strong international reputation for academic excellence and research.
