University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire is the international, multi-campus university tracing its roots back to 1828 and leading the way in modern learning today. Students will be joining a thriving community of over 42,000 students and staff from more than 100 countries. University of Central Lancashire started life in Preston and have since grown the number of UK campuses. As well as Preston, it is also based in Burnley (East Lancashire), Westlakes (West Cumbria) and London. University of Central Lancashire is honoured to establish the first British university in Cyprus in 2012 having been granted an academic license by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.

A core principle of their plan is to integrate the campus with the rest of the city, benefitting current and future generations of students, staff, visitors and the wider community.

The University of Central Lancashire is a public institution with a history dating back to 1828. It traces its origins to the Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in Preston by Joseph Livesey's Temperance Society. This society emerged from a pledge made by seven Preston working men to abstain from alcohol, aiming to promote education and personal development .
 

Initially housed in a classical-revivalist building on Cannon Street, the institution expanded under lawyer Edmund Robert Harris. In 1897, the Victoria Jubilee Technical School was established as part of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, providing technical education to local youths. Over time, the institution evolved, becoming Harris Art College in 1932, Harris College in 1952, Preston Polytechnic in 1973, and Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984. In 1992, it was granted university status by the Privy Council and became the University of Central Lancashire.
 

The university has undergone significant transformations since achieving university status. In December 2024, the Office for Students approved a proposal to change its name to the University of Lancashire, with the rebrand intended to take effect by September 2025 .
