History
The University of East London (UEL) traces its origins back to the late 19th century. In 1892, the newly established County Borough of West Ham decided to create the West Ham Technical Institute to serve the local community’s educational needs. The institute was officially opened in November 1898, following approval from the West Ham Technical Instruction Act Committee. Its aim was to provide accessible technical education, and at the opening ceremony, John Passmore Edwards described it as a “people’s university.” The institute offered courses in science, engineering, and art, and developed internal degree programmes in science and engineering, which were recognised by the University of London. It also established a women’s department.
During the 1930s and 1940s, growing demand for technical education led Essex County Council to establish two additional colleges in Walthamstow and Dagenham. These were the South West Essex Technical College and the South East Essex Technical College respectively. In 1970, the West Ham, Walthamstow, and Dagenham colleges merged to form the North East London Polytechnic. This merger was part of broader developments in higher education during that period. The new institution modernised and expanded its campuses, including the addition of the Arthur Edwards building at Stratford in 1982.
In 1988, the North East London Polytechnic was granted higher education institution status and renamed the Polytechnic of East London in 1989. Subsequently, in 1992, following changes in UK higher education legislation, the Polytechnic of East London was awarded university status and became the University of East London. This change marked its transition into a full university and aligned with the trend of polytechnics becoming universities across the UK. The university initially operated from two campuses: Barking and Stratford. The Barking campus closed in 2006.
In 1999, UEL opened its Docklands Campus, the first new university campus to be built in London for over fifty years. This campus is located in the redeveloped Docklands area of east London, at the Royal Albert Dock. It features modern facilities and is well connected by public transport.
In 2012, UEL increased its tuition fees to the maximum £9,000 permitted by new legislation, a rise from the previous £3,290 fee. The university also became a lead academic sponsor of Hackney University Technical College, one of the first university technical colleges in England, which opened in 2012.
In 2013, UEL opened its third campus, University Square Stratford (USS), a shared building co-owned with Birkbeck, University of London. This campus offers part-time and full-time study for adult learners and houses the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, as well as UEL’s Institute of Performing Arts. Facilities at USS include performance studios, editing suites, a mooting room, and lecture theatres. In July 2021, UEL acquired the remaining shares of University Square Stratford to further develop its facilities as part of its Vision 2028 strategy.
Throughout its history, UEL has expanded its academic offerings and facilities. It currently operates from three main campuses: Stratford, Docklands, and University Square Stratford. The Stratford Campus, close to the 2012 Olympic Park, houses schools such as Education and Communities, Health Sport and Bioscience, and Psychology. The Docklands Campus is the largest and includes SportsDock, a sports and academic centre opened in 2012, which served as the training base for Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
UEL is organised into seven teaching schools, including the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, the School of Education and Communities, the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience, the School of Psychology, and the School of Arts and Creative Industries. It also has a Graduate School supporting postgraduate research students.
The university has engaged in partnerships with professional bodies such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). It also supports enterprise development through Knowledge Dock, a business innovation centre accredited by the European Business Network.
UEL has been involved with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games since the bid was successful in 2005. The university’s campuses are located within the host borough of Newham, close to Olympic venues. Its facilities were used by Team USA for training, and its students participated as volunteers during the Games. Partnerships with organisations like British Swimming and Asics supported athlete development and research during this period.
Research at UEL has produced work aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on sustainability, health, social policy, and community impact. The university’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 submission showed that 92% of its research was internationally recognised or better.
The University of East London has grown to include over 40,000 students from more than 160 countries. It embraces diversity and inclusivity, holding awards such as the Athena Swan Bronze for gender equality and a Bronze Race Equality Charter award. The university ranks among the UK’s rising institutions for teaching quality and social inclusion and aims to prepare students for careers in a changing economy through its Vision 2028 strategy.
