History
The University of the Arts London was established in 1986 under the name The London Institute. Its formation brought together seven separate art, design, fashion, and media colleges in London, each with a long history of independent development. These colleges included Saint Martin’s School of Art, Chelsea School of Art, the London College of Printing, the Central School of Art and Design, Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, the College for Distributive Trades, and the London College of Fashion.
These institutions were originally established between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries by local authorities to provide specialist technical education in creative fields. In 1988, following the Education Reform Act, the London Institute became a single legal entity, and the first court of governors was formed in 1989. The institute was granted degree-awarding powers in 1993.
A coat of arms was granted in 1998. In 2003, the London Institute received approval from the Privy Council to become a university, and in 2004, it adopted the name University of the Arts London. In 2006, Wimbledon School of Art joined the university and became the sixth college, renamed Wimbledon College of Arts.
Over the years, the university made changes to its structure and campuses. Central Saint Martins moved to a new purpose-built campus in King’s Cross in 2011. The London College of Fashion merged with Cordwainers College in 2000.
Several colleges underwent internal restructuring, course updates, and space developments between 2008 and 2010, during which some courses were closed, and staff numbers were reduced. These changes led to student protests, particularly at the London College of Communication. In 2015, artist Grayson Perry was appointed Chancellor, replacing Kwame Kwei-Armah.
In 2021, James Purnell became Vice-Chancellor, followed by Karen Stanton, who was appointed as permanent Vice-Chancellor in 2024. The university continued to grow and invest in its physical infrastructure and digital platforms. In 2024, UAL launched the School of Pre-Degree Studies to support young students and introduced UAL Online, offering flexible postgraduate degrees.
The same year, a new sustainable campus for the London College of Fashion was opened at East Bank, and work on a new London College of Communication campus began, with completion expected in 2027. By 2025, UAL had over 22,000 students and a total income of around USD 540 million.
It continued to rank 2nd in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for Art and Design and remained the highest-ranked undergraduate provider in this category for the seventh consecutive year. UAL expanded its global reach and offered a wide range of courses in art, design, communication, fashion, media, and performing arts.
