Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology, commonly known as Vel Tech, is a private deemed-to-be-university located in Avadi, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Established in 1997 by Dr. R. Rangarajan and Dr. Sagunthala Rangarajan, the institution initially functioned as an engineering college affiliated with the University of Madras, offering undergraduate courses in computer science and engineering, electronics and communication engineering, and electrical and electronics engineering. In 2001, it became affiliated with Anna University. In 2008, it was recognised as a deemed-to-be-university by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and renamed Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology.

The institution is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), receiving an "A++" grade in February 2023, the highest possible. It was ranked 87th among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023.

Vel Tech offers a diverse range of academic programmes across various disciplines. Vel Tech has continuously sought to align itself with national accreditation and quality assurance standards. In November 2014, the institute received Tier I accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for its undergraduate programmes in aeronautical and mechanical engineering. In December 2015, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded the university an "A" grade, indicating its adherence to specific quality benchmarks in higher education. Further to this, in February 2023, Vel Tech achieved the highest possible accreditation grade of "A++" from NAAC, marking its progression in quality assurance.

Additionally, Vel Tech was ranked 83rd among engineering colleges in India according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022. The institution is recognised as a Category 1 deemed-to-be-university by the University Grants Commission (UGC), reflecting its compliance with stringent regulatory standards.

In 2023, it was ranked 87th, and in 2024, it improved slightly to 86th place.

Apart from NIRF, Vel Tech features in the India Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF). In 2023, it was placed 38th among engineering colleges and ranked 45th in 2024. The Week magazine’s rankings also include Vel Tech among the top engineering colleges. The institution was ranked 43rd in 2023 among 85 colleges, and it maintained the same 43rd position in 2024 among 92 colleges evaluated.

In the NIRF Innovation rankings, Vel Tech has shown notable presence. In 2023, it was ranked 11th among 312 colleges in India for innovation. For 2024, the ranking placed the institute within the 11th to 50th range.

Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology has demonstrated a significant level of success in its job placement efforts for graduating students. For the Class of 2022, the institute conducted placement activities for its Bachelor of Technology (BTech) cohort. As of August 2022, a total of 2,093 placement offers were extended to the BTech students of that batch.

The highest salary package offered to BTech students during the 2022 placement season was INR 44 lakhs per annum.
