Wajdi Mereb is an engineer, architect, and innovator who has more than 17 years of experience in digital transformation, assets management, and BIM (Building Information Modeling). Wajdi is the former Digital Transformation & BIM Manager at Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in Dubai. During his tenure there, Wajdi was awarded the ‘Innovator of the Year’ in the AEC Excellence Awards 2020 and the ‘Individual Achievement Award’ from the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Global Awards 2019 in London.
Currently, Wajdi is the Senior Manager- Engineering Digitalisation- BIM & Digital Twins at one of the reputable governmental entities since 2021, where he manages all aspects of Project Design- BIM throughout all the RIBA stages ensuring project goals are understood and delivered, and milestones are met.
Wajdi is a BSc. in Architectural Engineering and an MSc. in Engineering Management. He is also having an MSc. in Management and an MBA from the University of Sheffield/ U.K. with distinction.
Wajdi Mereb’s major highlight was his role as the Digital Transformation & BIM Manager at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in Dubai between 2015 and 2021. There, he helped integrate the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies with its ecosystem to improve transportation in the city. He represented RTA in the Dubai Digital Transformation Team in the construction sector and managed the UAE Building Smart chapter. In this regard, he also managed RTA’s internal project: Assets management digitisation and the Digital Twin technology.
Wajdi also led the successful BIM implementation in multi-billion strategic projects: the “Metro Route 2020 project” valued at $3 billion value that was an integral part of Dubai’s proposal for UAE to win the EXPO 2021.
As a policy expert, he authored and monitored the corporate BIM Policies for Vendors & Employees at RTA. He also led RTA to be the 1st entity in the globe obtaining ISO 19650 & UK BIM Level 2 certificates, and represented RTA in launching the compliance Kite-marks for OPEX phase “PAS 1192-3” & Security minded BIM “PAS 1192-5” in partnership with BSI.
Wajdi has served many multi-billion projects varying in size & scope utilising various BIM authoring software including Autodesk Revit & Navis-works, Synchro, Bentley AECOsim Triforma, and CDE platforms like Project-wise, BIM 360, & Aconex.
Wajdi started as an architect at Alta'mer Consultant Office after his Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering. He prepared architectural designs, drawings, and models using Revit architecture & Auto-CAD.
As a Senior BIM Architect at Consolidated Contractors International Company, he led the BIM unit for CCC- Muscat Airport Project. He authored multidisciplinary models by reflecting the new design changes & Engineers' instructions in order to generate quantities for commercial & project control purposes.
Wajdi was also responsible for transferring BIM knowledge to new employees through training sessions and training tasks. He also led BIM trainers in presenting training courses of 60 training hours per academic semester for the students of Engineering Faculty/ Birzeit University- Palestine.
He then became the Senior BIM Coordinator at TAV CCC Arabtec JV for Abu Dhabi Airport Project, UAE in 2013. Here, he represented the main contractor to coordinate envelope interfaces with related parties.
Wajdi joined the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA) in 2015. He managed BIM implementation in the following projects in coordination with all stakeholders of the following projects:
Metro Route 2020, Tram phase 2, Metro Green line & Redline Extension, Oud Metha & Satwa Bus stations, Metro-Stations Enhancement, and Public Bus Stations Development.
He managed RTA’s internal project of transformation towards assets management digitisation & Digital Twin. He also led RTA to be the 1st entity in the globe to obtain ISO 19650 & UK BIM Level 2 certificates. Wajdi represented RTA in launching the compliance Kite-marks for OPEX phase “PAS 1192-3” & Security minded BIM “PAS 1192-5” in partnership with BSI.
He also authored and monitored the corporate BIM Policies for Vendors & Employees, and the Employer Information Requirements (EIR) for all projects & developed BIM implementation performance targets.
Wajdi was the Deputy Manager of Asset Performance Development, a centralised governance section responsible for: checking & validating other departments’ implementation of the Asset Management System as per ISO 55001 standards, and analysing and recommending corrective actions & solutions for existing & future assets.
He also participated in utilising the best practices of reliability-centered maintenance, risk-based and smart predictive maintenance, and developing solutions for analysing asset conditions and asset lifespan extension.
Wajdi established the 1st BIM Center in the region for stakeholder collaboration & delivering BIM training courses. He represented RTA as a Member of the Dubai Digital Transformation Team in the construction sector & managing the Building Smart chapter in UAE.
Wajdi is consistenly working towards finding solutions in technology for various challenges that exist in the construction and design industry. As a BIM (Building Information Modelling) expert, he has benchmarked his skills in numerous projects including the Abu Dhabi Airport and RTA, Dubai.
Speaking about the technology, he said in a recent interview with Dinis Guarda:
“These are smart 3D models that can be helpful for us to share and generate information, and to support design stage, construction stage and operation stage. So, it is simply a 3D environment which is can be visualised and understood easily by everyone.”
His vision of technological solutions is: “We need the new technologies that can support the quality of our projects at any point of time, while minimising the costs, efforts, and time."
