History
Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) was established in 2009 as a state-owned entity to manage waste collection and disposal in the Maldives. Its purpose was to address growing waste management issues in the country and implement a structured system for collection, disposal, and recycling. Initially, WAMCO focused on planning waste management strategies and preparing for operational responsibilities.
On 1st January 2016, WAMCO officially started its operations by taking over the waste management functions for the Greater Malé Region, including the management of waste disposal at Thilafushi. This marked the beginning of its active role in handling solid waste in the country. In the same year, the company was given the responsibility of managing and operating the first Regional Waste Management Facility (RWMF) at R. Vandhoo Island. This facility was developed to process and manage waste from various parts of the country, supporting the government’s efforts to improve waste disposal and treatment.
In 2017, WAMCO expanded its waste collection and management services to the southern regions of the Maldives, including Addu City and Fuvahmulah City. During this period, the company introduced digital services to improve operational efficiency. On 12th November 2017, it launched Avaspay, an online bill-payment platform that allowed users to pay waste management fees digitally.
In early 2018, WAMCO introduced new waste collection services under the CAPS and CAPS Lite categories. These services were designed to handle bulky waste, including construction and demolition waste. Additionally, the company launched Veshifaara, a digital platform aimed at tracking and digitalising waste management operations. This initiative helped improve monitoring, coordination, and efficiency.
In 2019, WAMCO introduced new employee benefits, including six months of paid maternity leave and one month of compensated paternity leave. This policy was implemented to support its workforce and improve employee welfare. The following year, the COVID-19 pandemic affected waste management operations in the Maldives. On 15th April 2020, WAMCO had to suspend services for 24 hours due to a lockdown imposed in the Greater Malé Area. The company responded by implementing preventive adjustments to waste transfer stations and operational procedures, ensuring that waste collection and disposal could continue under new health and safety measures.
In the years following the pandemic, WAMCO continued to improve its waste management system. It expanded its collection services and worked on developing better waste management infrastructure across the country. It introduced various services, including household waste collection, commercial waste management, call-and-pick-up services, transfer station facilities, special disposal services, and vehicle transfer services. The company also strengthened its engagement with stakeholders to promote sustainable waste management practices.
At present, WAMCO continues to manage waste collection, disposal, and treatment services across the Maldives. It operates regional facilities and ensures proper waste handling in both urban and island communities. The company focuses on integrating modern technology, enhancing operational efficiency, and promoting recycling and waste reduction initiatives. The board is led by Managing Director Mujuthaba Jaleel and Company Secretary Mariyam Najuwa. WAMCO remains committed to improving waste management services and supporting environmental sustainability in the Maldives.
