History

Whirlpool Corporation’s history began in the mid-1800s when a rapids-taming canal was built in St. Joseph, Michigan. This canal created the water power needed to mass-manufacture washing machines, which led to the establishment of the first laundry appliance company in St. Joseph more than 100 years ago. By 1911, the two companies combined to become today’s Whirlpool Corporation, which quickly became a leading manufacturer of home appliances.
