Named in honour of the revered social reformer Sant Gadge Baba, the university's inception marked a significant step towards providing higher education to the underserved districts of Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldhana, and Washim.

Initially, the university faced challenges as a developing institution, including limited infrastructure and resources. However, over the years, it has transformed significantly, expanding its facilities and academic offerings. The university campus, which spans over 225 hectares, now hosts 20 postgraduate departments offering 25 diverse courses across multiple disciplines. This extensive growth underscores the university's commitment to broadening educational opportunities for its students.

A pivotal aspect of the university's mission has been the upliftment of backward and downtrodden communities through inclusive education. This dedication is evident in its various initiatives designed to make higher education accessible to all social strata. The university has invested heavily in infrastructure, including a fully computerised library, state-of-the-art sports facilities, and centres for cultural activities, fostering a comprehensive development environment for its students.

The university has also benefited from substantial grants provided by various funding agencies, such as the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). These grants have supported numerous academic and research initiatives, contributing to the university's pursuit of excellence.
