Angelica Lo Duca

Angelica Lo Duca is currently a researcher at the Institute of Informatics and Telematics of the National Research Council (IIT-CNR) in Italy, where she has worked since 2012. She focuses on Data Science, Data Engineering, Data Storytelling, Data Journalism, and Web Applications. She is also an adjunct professor of Data Journalism at the University of Pisa, where she has been teaching since 2020.

She has published multiple books, including Data Storytelling with Python Altair and Generative AI (Manning Publications), Learning and Operating Presto (O'Reilly Media), Comet for Data Science (Packt Publishing), and Become a Great Data Storyteller (Wiley). Her work has also led to over 40 scientific papers published at national and international conferences and journals. Additionally, Angelica has participated in several national and international research projects.

Angelica has been involved in various tech and research projects, including ClaviusOnTheWeb, a platform for the works of Christophorus Clavius, and OpeNER, a project focused on Natural Language Processing.

She completed her PhD in Computer Science at the University of Pisa, where she focused on secure cooperation in challenging networks. Prior to that, she earned a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, both with honours.

In 2024, Angelica published Become a Great Data Storyteller with Wiley, which aims to teach individuals how to effectively convey data-driven insights through storytelling, making complex data understandable and engaging.

In addition to her books, Angelica has contributed to numerous academic papers, with over 40 published works at national and international conferences and journals. Her research has spanned various topics, including network security, semantic web, linked data, and blockchain technology.

Angelica has also been actively involved in several key research and tech projects. She initiated ClaviusOnTheWeb in 2012, a platform aimed at making the works and literature of Christophorus Clavius accessible through modern technologies such as computational linguistics, knowledge engineering, and web visualisation. Another notable project, OpeNER, focused on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and was developed to process and understand language in a more sophisticated manner.

In 2022, Angelica worked as a course instructor for Educative, Inc., teaching interactive lessons on using Python Altair for data storytelling. She has also contributed as a writer on Medium, where she shares her knowledge of data science and web applications with a wide audience.

As of 2025, Angelica is continuing her work at IIT-CNR and the University of Pisa while also working on new projects related to data storytelling with the integration of AI tools such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, and GitHub Copilot. She remains an influential figure in the field, actively contributing to the development of data science and its applications across various sectors.
