Summary
ASML (originally standing for Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography) is a Dutch multinational company that designs and manufactures semiconductor manufacturing equipment. It is the world’s leading supplier of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry and is one of the top three companies in the semiconductor industry.
ASML’s products include lithography systems, software, services, and materials used in the fabrication of complex integrated circuits. The company also provides other products such as mask aligners, pellicles, and wafer-handling systems. ASML’s lithography systems enable clients to produce smaller, faster, and more efficient chips than traditional methods. The company has customers in the United States, Europe, and Asia, and is listed on the Euronext Amsterdam Stock Exchange.
As of 2022 it is the largest supplier for the semiconductor industry and the sole supplier in the world of extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) photolithography machines that are required to manufacture the most advanced chips. As of June 2023, ASML was the most highly valued European tech company, with a market capitalisation of about US$280 billion.
History
ASML Holding N.V. is a Dutch company that specialises in producing lithography machines used in the semiconductor industry. It was founded in 1984 by Philips, Advanced Semiconductor Materials International (ASMI), and several Dutch investors. In the early years, ASML focused on developing machines for the production of memory chips, and in 1988, it released its first commercial product, the PAS 2000. However, the company struggled to gain a foothold in the market, and by the early 1990s, it faced financial difficulties.
In 1995, ASML received a significant boost when it partnered with Intel, which invested $1.5 billion in the company. This helped ASML to develop new machines capable of producing microprocessors, which were in high demand at the time. ASML also acquired several companies, including Silicon Valley Group and SVG Lithography, which helped to expand its product offerings. By the end of the decade, ASML had become one of the leading lithography equipment manufacturers in the world, with a market share of over 60%.
From 2000 to present, ASML Holding N.V. continued to expand and innovate in the semiconductor industry. In 2001, the company introduced its first 300mm lithography system, which increased the number of chips that could be produced on a single wafer. This system quickly became the industry standard, and ASML continued to develop new technologies, such as extreme ultraviolet lithography, to keep pace with the demand for faster and more powerful processors.
ASML's growth was fueled by strategic partnerships with major semiconductor manufacturers, including Samsung, TSMC, and Intel, who invested heavily in the company's research and development efforts. In recent years, ASML has also faced challenges related to trade tensions between the US and China, as well as supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the company has continued to thrive, with a market capitalisation of over $200 billion as of 2023, and a reputation as one of the most innovative and influential companies in the semiconductor industry.
Mission
The mission of ASML Holding N.V. is to enable the production of affordable, high-performance microchips by providing the most advanced lithography solutions to the semiconductor industry. In order to achieve this mission, ASML is committed to continuous innovation and collaboration with its customers and partners, with a focus on developing technologies that push the limits of what is possible in the field of chip manufacturing.
ASML's mission is driven by the belief that microchips are essential to improving people's lives, and that the company has a responsibility to ensure that these chips are produced in a sustainable and ethical manner. To this end, ASML has implemented a number of initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental footprint, promoting diversity and inclusion in its workforce, and ensuring that its products are used in ways that benefit society as a whole.
Vision
The vision of ASML Holding N.V. is to be the premier provider of advanced lithography solutions to the semiconductor industry, driving the development of the most powerful and efficient microchips in the world. This vision is driven by a commitment to continuous innovation and collaboration, as well as a deep understanding of the needs and challenges facing semiconductor manufacturers.
ASML's vision is rooted in the belief that microchips have the power to transform the world, from improving healthcare and transportation to enabling new forms of communication and entertainment. To realise this vision, the company is focused on developing technologies that not only meet the current needs of the industry, but also push the boundaries of what is possible, enabling new forms of computing and communication that were once unimaginable.
At the heart of ASML's vision is a commitment to sustainability, diversity, and ethical business practices, ensuring that the company's success is measured not only by financial performance, but also by its impact on society and the environment. By pursuing this vision, ASML aims to be a driving force in the ongoing evolution of the semiconductor industry, helping to shape the future of technology and innovation for decades to come.

Products and Services
ASML Holding N.V. is a leading supplier of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry. The company's products and services can be grouped into three main categories: immersion lithography, EUV lithography, and metrology and inspection.
Immersion lithography is a technique that uses water to enhance the resolution of lithography systems, allowing manufacturers to produce smaller and more precise microchips. ASML's immersion lithography systems, which include the NXT platform, are used by some of the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers to produce a wide range of chips, from memory modules to microprocessors.
EUV lithography is a newer technology that uses extreme ultraviolet light to create patterns on silicon wafers. ASML's EUV lithography systems, which include the Twinscan NXT platform, are capable of producing even smaller and more complex chips than immersion lithography systems, making them an essential tool for manufacturers of high-performance microprocessors.
Metrology and inspection are essential components of the chip manufacturing process, allowing manufacturers to ensure that their products meet the strictest quality standards. ASML offers a range of metrology and inspection tools, including the YieldStar and HMI platforms, which enable manufacturers to detect defects and improve yields, reducing the cost of chip production and improving overall product quality.
