Chitkara University

Chitkara University, Punjab, is a private university established in 2010 by the Chitkara Educational Trust under The Chitkara University Act, 2008, passed by the Punjab State Legislature. Located in Jansla Village near Rajpura, the university's 70-acre campus lies along the Chandigarh–Patiala National Highway, approximately 33 km from Chandigarh.

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across multiple disciplines including engineering, management, pharmacy, health sciences, nursing, design, architecture, law, education, hospitality, and media. Originally started in 2002 as Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology, affiliated to Punjab Technical University, it transitioned into a university with degree-awarding powers recognised under Sections 2(f) and 22(1) of the UGC Act, 1956.

Chitkara University is accredited with an A+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and its programmes are approved by statutory bodies such as UGC, COA, PCI, NCTE, INC, BCI, and NCHMCT. It holds memberships and recognitions from organisations like AIU, IET (UK), UNAI, AUAP, ASSOCHAM, and CII.

The university has also been recognised as a Business Incubator and Innovation Centre by the Ministry of MSME and the Department of Science and Technology. It ranks 90th among Indian universities in the NIRF 2024 rankings and is placed in the 1201–1400 band globally and 501–550 band in Asia by QS World University Rankings 2025.

Chitkara University, Punjab, was established by the Chitkara Educational Trust and is located in Jansla Village, Rajpura, along the Chandigarh–Patiala National Highway (NH-64), approximately 33 kilometres from Chandigarh. The institution began its journey in 2002 with the establishment of the Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology (CIET), initially affiliated to Punjab Technical University. Over the years, the Trust expanded its educational footprint by adding new disciplines and institutions.

The turning point came in 2010, when Chitkara University was granted full university status through “The Chitkara University Act,” passed by the Punjab State Legislature in 2008 and enacted in 2009. This transition allowed the university to function as an independent degree-awarding body, recognised under Sections 2(f) and 22(1) of the UGC Act, 1956. Since then, the university has grown into a multi-disciplinary institution offering a wide range of programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.

The 70-acre main campus provides facilities for education in engineering, management, pharmacy, health sciences, nursing, hospitality, design, architecture, law, education, and media. The university houses various schools, such as Chitkara Business School, Chitkara College of Pharmacy, Chitkara School of Health Sciences, and Chitkara Design School, among others. These schools are supported by modern infrastructure, including ICT-equipped classrooms, well-furnished laboratories, and spaces for co-curricular and extra-curricular engagement.

Chitkara University is recognised by several national statutory bodies. It holds UGC approval and has been accredited with an A+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), scoring a CGPA of 3.26. Its academic programmes have approval from bodies including the Council of Architecture (COA), Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Indian Nursing Council (INC), and Bar Council of India (BCI). Hotel management programmes are affiliated with the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT).

The university is also actively involved in national and international collaborations. It is recognised as a Business Incubator by the Ministry of MSME and has innovation and incubation centres acknowledged by the Ministry of Education and the Department of Science and Technology. It is a member of several prominent bodies such as the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), ASSOCHAM, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

In terms of rankings, Chitkara University has been placed in the 90th position among Indian universities by the NIRF 2024. It also ranks 19th in pharmacy, 35th in architecture, 58th in management, 94th in engineering, and 54th in medical categories. Internationally, QS World University Rankings placed it in the 501–550 band in Asia and 1201–1400 band globally for the year 2025. Within South Asia, it was ranked 143rd.

Chitkara University, Punjab, offers a wide range of academic programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels in various disciplines. 

At the undergraduate level, the university provides several programmes. In engineering, students can pursue a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in various specialisations. The business faculty offers the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme. The pharmacy department offers the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.), and the design school offers the Bachelor of Design (B.Des.). Students interested in commerce can enrol in the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.), while those aiming to enter the healthcare sector can take up the Bachelor of Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing) and Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom.). In the field of arts and media, the university offers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in Economics, Journalism and Mass Communication, and Film and Television (BJMC).

At the postgraduate level, the university offers Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes with different specialisations. In engineering, students can pursue a Master of Engineering (M.E.) in select disciplines. The Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm.) is offered for advanced pharmaceutical studies. The university also offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Journalism and Mass Communication, Master of Nursing (M.Sc. Nursing), and Master of Design (M.Des.) in design-related fields.

Chitkara University also provides doctoral-level education through its Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programmes. These are offered across disciplines such as engineering, management, pharmacy, health sciences, nursing, media, and design, enabling research-driven academic advancement and professional development.

In addition to these core degree programmes, the university offers education in specialised areas through its constituent schools. These include programmes in sales and marketing, maritime studies, applied engineering, planning and architecture, hospitality and culinary management, legal studies, education, and online education through Chitkara University Online. These offerings cater to emerging fields and provide opportunities for multidisciplinary learning.

All courses at Chitkara University are supported by appropriate approvals and accreditations from relevant regulatory bodies such as the UGC, AICTE, PCI, COA, NCTE, INC, BCI, and NCHMCT. The curriculum is delivered using classroom instruction, laboratory work, field experience, and project-based learning.

Chitkara University, Punjab, has consistently featured in both national and international rankings. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, the university was ranked 90th in the university category across India. In subject-specific categories, it secured the 19th rank in pharmacy, 35th in architecture, 54th in management, and 94th in engineering. The university also featured in the 11–50 band in the NIRF innovation rankings and was placed in the 101–150 band overall.

Internationally, Chitkara University is listed in the QS World University Rankings 2025 in the 1201–1400 global band. It was also placed in the 501–550 band in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025.

In addition to QS rankings, the university has also been recognised by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025. It was placed in the 601–800 global band overall. In subject-specific categories, THE ranked Chitkara University in the 501–600 band for both business and economics, and medical and health sciences. For computer science and engineering, it was placed in the 601–800 and 501–600 bands respectively.

Chitkara University, Punjab, has reported successful placement outcomes for its Engineering and Management graduates from the 2023 batch. The university concluded its placement drive with participation from over 670 recruiting companies, representing a wide range of industry sectors such as Information Technology, Assurance, Education, Operations, Sales, and Marketing. 

For BTech graduates, the highest salary package offered during the 2023 placement season was INR 1.11 crore per annum. In the case of MBA graduates, the placement report for 2023 indicated a highest package of INR 44 lakhs per annum, while the average package stood at INR 9 lakhs per annum.

The list of prominent recruiters included well-known companies such as Adobe, Deloitte, Amazon, Zomato, ITC, DLF, and HP.
