History
Christ University, originally established as Christ College, is a private, deemed-to-be university located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. The institution was founded in 1969 with a vision to offer quality education and holistic development to its students. It was declared a deemed-to-be university by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, on 22 July 2008. The institution's establishment was inspired by the educational vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a 19th-century educationalist and social reformer from South India, who founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation in 1831. This congregation manages Christ University today.
In its early years, Christ College began as a modest institution offering undergraduate courses in arts, science, and commerce. The college aimed to provide quality higher education in a Catholic ethos while promoting discipline and academic excellence. In 1970, the college introduced its first degree programmes in Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom). Over time, the institution expanded its curriculum and introduced a wide range of academic courses.
In 1981, the college began offering graduate programmes, including a Master's in Sociology and later expanded into other disciplines such as Business Management, Computer Science, and Hotel Management. The establishment of the first self-financing programme in BSc (Physics, Mathematics, Electronics) in 1988 marked a significant step in the diversification of its academic offerings. Christ College continued to grow, establishing itself as a leading educational institution in Bengaluru.
In 2004, Christ College achieved a significant milestone when it was granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This recognition allowed the institution to design its own curriculum and adopt innovative academic practices. As part of its academic evolution, Christ College was also identified as an "Institution with Potential for Excellence" by the UGC in 2006, reflecting its commitment to advancing higher education.
The next pivotal moment in the institution's history came in 2008 when it was conferred the status of a "deemed-to-be university" by the Ministry of Human Resource Development under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Following this transformation, the institution was officially renamed Christ University. The decision to grant university status further elevated Christ University’s stature in the academic world, and it set the stage for further expansion in terms of academic offerings, infrastructure, and global collaborations.
Christ University has consistently been a leader in maintaining high academic standards. It was one of the first institutions in India to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1998, and subsequently, it was reaccredited with an ‘A’ grade. The university's curriculum is designed to reflect global higher education practices, focusing on interdisciplinary learning, research, and service.
As the university continued to grow, it expanded its campus infrastructure. The main campus, located in the heart of Bengaluru, spans 25 acres and is situated in a prime area near residential and commercial hubs such as Koramangala, BTM Layout, and Jayanagar. The campus is part of the larger 100-acre Dharmaram College Campus.
